Default Win 7 Updates and Shutting Down

Murphy's Law seems to apply when I switch on my Laptop and need to use it urgent.

I have a relatively new HPO laptop with Win 7 Home Premium and auto Win Updates selected.

Very often when I switch on the laptop and need to use it urgently the message comes up indicating Windows Updates are being installed and not to turn off the computer. The last lot took 20 mins and I needed to use the computer.

I have never tried to switch off as I think something bad might happen. So is there a way I can delay the computer doing these updates on turn on - most times it is not an issue but is annoying when I need to use the laptop.

I would have thought that it would have given you option of installing at that time or delaying - I want to leave the auto update setting as is but just delay if needed when starting the computer.

    Thanks

    Garry

You can still use the laptop while updates are being installed or downloaded.

It loads the updates before Windows comes on stream so no, the laptop cannot be used.

i assume I risk crashing the operating system if I just switch the laptop off.

thanks Phil - yes, but I thought that when the computer does the updates on start there might have been a way to postpone in some circumstances.

    Cheers

there is, just make it dont check for updates
every now & then, run it manually from c panel
if you want to be ruthless, you disable the service all together
ive never been a big believer in than anyway
lots will say differ, but your modem\router, av software keep 99& of it out i reckon
