Apple movie maker is pretty good, but of course you need an apple device to do this... Otherwise I'm sure there must be some open source software out there.

If you don't want to do anything fancy, I find "Video ReDo" pretty good, but it is a commercial package:

I persisted with open source / freeware solutions for a while, but none of them were any good for what I wanted.

Does just about anything you need. I think Sony Vegas Video or some such is supposed to be good too, but Redo is enough for me. I never found any of the freebees much good.

If you are not editing anything, and just joining, then HJSPLIT is for you. You will have to rename the files in sequence to get it to work properly, but it's free and will do what you want.

Just spotted this thread, I have been pondering the same question myself.

I am building a large collection of music videos from the 70s/80s and 90s. Some I need to trim a bit of presenter of the start or end, some I may need to re encode. Some I need to try and boost the volume on.
I may also record some of MusicMax on Foxtel and cut it up.

Would the above mentioned software do the job ? Or is there some sort of "gold standard" software that is supposed to be the ducks gots for video editing ? I dont know a lot about it, hence the questions.

    Thanks

Video Redo will allow you to pick exact frames to cut at. Then it will only re encode a few frames either side of the cut and leave the rest alone. Its super quick in that regard.
