I doubt you'll find any anti virus that isn't resource hungry these days.
Although you could try a word of warning clamwin doesn't scan real time, you have to manually scan for possible infections.
Hi guys and gals and new peters pals, Would like a virus scanner that has little overhead. I've just rebuilt my laptop (it's an ol dunger) with windows XP and just installed Chrome (firefox seems a bit bloated these days) and it's running fine again. I was running the Microsoft virus scanner but that seemed a bit resource hungry before I rebuilt and before that AGV which seemed the same. Any recommendations? Don't mind buying it.
Cheers,
Leroy

Kaspersky Internet Security, Should be able to get a licence for about $15 on eBay.
Also install the chrome extension Ad-Guard.

it might not be scanning that will be the issue, it might be more of what ones will work on XP??
some of themmight not work on XP and those that do maybe resource hungry, can't tell you for sure as I don't run XP anymore

I'm a big fan of ESET Smart Security. I have it running on every machine. It uses the NOD32 antivirus....available as a 30 day trial I believe.
Don't have XP anymore, but it used to be fine. All mine are high end machines as well, so resource problems don't exist.
The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.

Originally used AVG with XP but found it unstable after an update so switched to Avast which has been great with OS's from XP to Win7 (32 & 64 bit). Unobtrusive, fast, effective and frequent online virus definition updates.

ok thanks everyone for your input. I rebuilt the main laptop I use and went with bitdefender and it seems ok after it did its scan of the system and settled down. So seeing I was in the mood I also rebuilt the other which is a similar vintage so also put XP on it as well. I decided to give Avast a go. But since I put it on it seems to have bogged things down. All I have installed is chrome and I allowed the Avast extension to be enabled in Chrome. I'll see how it goes and maybe do another reboot but at the moment I think I might remove it and go for something else!

all rest are just resource hogs in my opinion

I'm reinstalling as we speak XP on the other machine. I can't cope with Avast!
I'll get it back to where I had it before I loaded Avast to make sure it's running ok first!!

Surprised am I
Been using the free version of Avast for ages on a variety of boxes and never had a problem with it. My bad experiences have been with MacAfee, Norton and AVG, haven't tried the other AVs as yet.

I have been in computers since the 70's . I don't bother with a virus checker anymore for the reasons you mention. There are very few virus infections now a days. They are mainly malware and Trojans.Malware Bytes gets rid of most. The best advice I give people is to think twice before they click.
But I must admit that I have a MacBook Pro that I use for shopping and banking. A desktop set up for downloading and a laptop for surfing. And not one has a virus checker running.
I have Avast running on a number of windows machines. It does a good job, but I've found it be bloated and obtrusive. It even opens popups from time to time trying to sell further products. These are business machines, but I won't be renewing my subscription.
