I don't have Windows defender because I know it will be another useless, memory hogging program from Microsoft. lol.

Strangely, updates are starting to work now, but it takes several hours just to get one or a few updates at one time.

KB 3083710 installed but took a very long time. I couldn't get KB 3102810 to install, it came back with an error that didn't really explain what was wrong.
After lots more fiddling, I managed to get another couple from windows update to install (again after a very long time) and also kept trying KB 3102810 in between.
Well today KB 3102810 finally installed but took about three hours.
I then tested windows update again and surprise surprise, it's now working and fast, at least for the five files I picked. Plenty more to go.

I haven't yet checked on the other computers but I'll go straight to those two files and see what happens. If it fixes all of them, then I can only assume Microsoft has left a gap in the update files sequence that perhaps left these two files out.

    osczzzz you're a champ.

Here is what may be necessary, first backup ALL files you need to keep to DVD! then do a repair install, during the repair install you will have the option to download updates or not.DO NOT download updates at this time. once the repair install is finished, and before you do anything else, manually download the two updates I previously mentioned, and install as I said. Then try the rest of the updates see what happens. Be aware I have not tried this, nor have I updated since the May June 2015 updates messed up My laptop preventing me from downloading common file types with IE 11. You also might want to block the 18 or so updates that push WIN 10 and all the microsoft spyware. Good Luck. Now that I've written this I guess I need to start backing up the files on My laptop.

Thanks but I may not need to do this now, really strange, looks like the updates are starting to work again. Dunno why, I don't think I really did anything to fix it in the last couple of days.
I'll have to see if any of my other computers will do updates.

Have you got a list of those unwanted win10 KB numbers ?

There is a good discussion over at P25 communications support, under Industry news titled Windows 10 ISO download. Some of the KB numbers are now prerequirements for IE 11 this has resulted in My moveing to Firefox. When I rebuild my laptop I will probably not apply any update newer than April 2015 without lots of research as the May and June updates did a number on it.Not to mention MS is continuing to slip there Win 10 spyware into the updates for Win 7 and 8.

    Thanks for that.
There's some pretty scary stuff in that discussion. I find it hard to understand how Microsoft can legally and morally get away with what they're doing.
