The Packageing looks very very Microsoft original ..... shrink wrapped very nicley .... no spelling mistakes or wrong images that I can see ....

    What do you think ?

    My concerns about it are:

I may be able to get a refund from ebay if I don't open the packaging, but installing it & activating it & running windows Genuine tool & Windows update may be the olny way to find out if it is genuine ?

I have read some fake copies use MSDN keys (for developers) & do not fail straight away .... but will fail eventually .... (usually after positive feedback is left for ebayer)

The COA label says MADE IN USA (I have read this is an indication that it is a fake ?) maybe should be "MADE IN PUERTO RICO" ?

There should be TWO CD/DVD's in the packaging 32 bit & 64 bit install discs (don't know until I open the srink wrap & the case)

The metal thread near "microsoft.com/howtotell looks funny to me on the COA ?

Hologram on the install discs may be stick on transfers (but we won't know untill the packaging is opened ?)

The ebayer did not put his address on the back of the package sent though Australia post ?

However I would be more happy to find out it is Genuine & there is nothing to worry about .....

I've been caught out with an ebay 'bargain' price Windows disc previously.

Worked for a while, but stopped, when the same activation key had been registered several times.

The holographic image on the disks themselves is the giveaway if it's fake, usually.

Unfortunately, you'd have to open it first to see.

My guess if the price was very good... it's likely to be fake.

Especially if it was sent from China/Asia.

If it says "Made in USA" it's not authentic.

Ask for a refund from the seller. Always buy Microsoft software from a reputable store.

    Thanks for the links Phil

I paid $228 ..... thought it wasn't too cheap to be doggy ..... now think never again buy off ebay .....

he has got a nearly perfect positive feedback on ebay (only one customer left negative feedback for a different reason) (....... but like I said it may take a while for it to be found out)

most feedback say something like "Installed and activated without any issues"

I will not name the Seller .... I may email him my concerns & see if there is a chance to return the item & get a refund ...... & see what his response is

Looks risky to me too "the MADE IN USA" .... if I open the sealed package ... he could say I have changed the contents of the package etc ... & then take no responsibility .....

I also wish there was someone at Microsoft in Australia I could talk to about this ?

If I was in Sydney at the moment I would take it to the Microsoft shop (in Pitt Street ? & ask them) but I'm about 3-4 hours away ATM

I have also read Microsoft can look up a product key & tell you what product it is meant to be used with, i.e Windows Retail, OEM, MSDN, etc ..... but the Product key is inside the sealed package ....(catch 22)

Surely Microsoft can work out a way to identify a genuine copy without breaking the seal ...... (but the copiers are also getting good at copying the packaging too)

Microsoft say deal with Reputable Company sellers ....... not at auction sales ..... & I guess they are right .....

I would also like to hear the case if there is any possibility it could be legitimate Microsoft software......

another option may be to install it & refuse to leave feedback for him until my ebay rights for a refund run out (after 45 days I think)

& see if it fails within that 45 day period ...... still not sure how ebay would feel about opening the contents etc ?

If you paid via paypal you could lodge a claim, if it did not perform as advertised. eg: sold as genuine but pirated copy provided.

OK thanks to you guys who gave me some advice in this thread,

I thought I would let you know some more about what happened ......

It was not as easy as I thought to get someone at Microsoft in Australia to verify if it was an Original Microsoft product or not ......

I ended up ringing Microsoft General Support (Australia) this morning (I could not find a Microsoft Piracy Contact number to ring) .....

The Guy I spoke to was Asian I think ..... & he could only barely understand me & I could only barely understand him ..... (not a great start)

I said to him I wanted to verify the product to be genuine without opening the packaging if possible ..... I said I was concerned about the "MADE IN USA" on the COA .... he said he did not know anything about that ..... !!!

He asked me for my Product key ..... I said OK I will open the package ..... He first said it was invalid but could I repeat it a couple of times .... he then said it was a valid product key ..... so I said OK and hung up

I then had a chance to look at the contents

there were two discs in the package 32 bit & 64 bit ....

there was a book & a product key & they looked original

I then had a chance to look at the discs

The 32 bit disc had a clear sticker over the hologram .... so I pulled it off & it took off parts of the hologram (sticker) underneath

The 64 bit disc hologram looks better but I can feel an edge like an edge of a sticker with my finger nail ......& on closer inspection looks like a sticker too

    here are some pics"

So even though Microsoft said it was a Valid product key (& would activate) ...... the Discs look Fake to me ..... thence it must be all fake .... ?

I just post this as a warning to others not to get caught like I did .....

    I don't think I should even try to install it .... ?

What do you guys think ?

    I have a legit Win 7 disk.
The hologram is not stickered or covered with any type of sticker and you can't scrape any of it off.
The only sticker (or could be called a sticker I guess) on the disk is the one in the centre which tells you what version it is (64bit, 32bit, Pro, Ultimate) and you can't even scrape or lift that off.

Oh and where yours says Windows7 on the hologram - mine has 2 that say "Genuine" and the other says "Microsoft".

BTW: It was made in Singapore.

    correct
    this sites the snitzel

    mainly, this part

    Multi Focal
With the latest product releases on CD or DVD from Microsoft, additional optical security features can be seen from both sides of the disc, near the inner hole of the disc and along the outer edge. The features are embedded within the disc; they are not on a sticker. When the disc is flipped over, any text or numbers will be seen as a mirror image of the reverse side.
    Channel switch
On the thin Outer Mirror Band (OMB) ring, there is an area that shows “Microsoft” changing to the word “Genuine” as you slightly tilt the disc from left to right.

ps. looking at your pick, the sticker proves it, threaten to dob him in & blackmail him for heaps

I rang Microsoft again to check the product key & he told me:

    1. It is an OEM Product Key for Windows 7 Ultimate

    2. It has been activated once already ...... (& its activation is associated with the hardware on "that" computer .....)

Mine looks like a retail box purchase package to me ..... not an OEM ?
