Graphics cards/drivers are a common cause.
having a semi strange issue with my main system
AMD fx-8150
8gb ram
gb-970A-D3
the system randomly hangs depending on what im doing, it can be once a day or upto 5.
the system seems to do it more regularly when im installing/updating games on steam, but not when playing
also randomly when uploading files to the internet such as youtube, soundcloud or my vps.
but other times such as when using adobe products, audition, premier pro or after affects its fine
have run seatools etc over all my hdd`s and all pass
have run memtest over the ram and got a fail, so replaced the ram now passes
have replaced mobo as a i had a spare of the same model and revision
full virus scan, malware, spyware etc including sfc / scannow
short of replacing the cpu, is there anything else i can try ?

Graphics cards/drivers are a common cause.
also check the 12v psu listing in the bios
run sfc /scannow
Are you sure it isn't heat related? Is the Heatsink properly attached to the CPU?. What happens if you leave the covers off? PSU is also another potential problem, is it powerful enough to handle the strain? Could be failing.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
didnt think of sussing the bios, although it has had a reset to stock a few times, any particular option i should be looking for ?
have done a lot of reinstalling of drivers etc in the past
am 100% positive its not heat, i have coretemp running and max it will hit is around 58c

is it keeping the correct time also check the voltage of the bios battery in the bios, batteries are cheap it may pay to put a new one in
what windoz is it?
can you do a refresh, sounds like your looking for anything but the obvious
format time lol

Mostly, there is NO GOOD REASON to reformat in order to solve computer problems.
Yes, I realise that it sometimes cures a problem, but why not attempt to find the actual cause instead of resorting to this brute-force tactic?
Also, if it's not an operating system issue, reformatting will not solve the issue.
i agree with the above 2 posts,i do not think a format will solve anything
just to keep the askers happy
wondows 10.1 pro dualboot with linux
refresh is out of the question did one in feb this year, as for format wont be done until i get a new external hdd later this year when i do a backup to replace all my hdd`s
on to the others
mobo battery is fine
clock is fine give or take a few micro seconds, synced to my isps ntp
bios clock is fine also, as is all bios settings seem fine (have even done a reset, and tried optimized rather than custom)
it is a hardware issue as it happens in linux now and then, just not as often as windows
have dumped the multi meter over the psu and all is good there, voltages are as they should be
one of my tech mates looked at it last night, and even he is stumped

A multimeter won't show noise or brief glitches on the power supply rails. I'd beg / borrow / buy another PSU - even if you buy a cheap and nasty PSU for testing, it would prove the point.
Is the computer booting from an SSD? I recently fixed a weird intermittent freezing problem with an Intel SSD drive by turning off the SATA "Link Power Management" (LPM) feature. The fault never showed up when running a hard drive test, because the intense bus activity prevented LPM from kicking in during the test.

sorry for delay in getting back so to follow up
new psu installed seasonic 750w 80plus gold
not booting from ssd
cant see any leaking caps on the mobo
have been messing with the bios and setting values manually and changing some voltages with the first available +/- value and got mixed results from more to less freezing
so i am really beginning to think its either the cpu or mobo
if anyone can recommend some other manual settings feel free to post
here is a dump from CPU-z
my last edit to the bios was setting all the memory timings manually as it was detecting my ram as 1333, so had to set the profile to 1600 oddly this had better results than manually
setting it to x8 (now i know this is no real biggy as by default it sets to 1333, but can run @ 1600)
so just to reclarify everything as i noticed i was slack in my initial post
MOBO GB GA-970A-d3 revision 1.3 (just did a reflash of the bios as well(wondering if im safe to update it to the newest 3.0))
RAM G.Skill 8192 MB (DDR3-1337) - XMP 1.2 - P/N: F3-12800CL10-8GBXL
CPU AMD FX-8150 8core currently running at 3599.81 MHz

If you have a spare or new hard drive try a fresh windows install on that hard drive. That way you can rule out a hard drive problem completely.

Have you done a memtest for check for bad ram? Ram is the most common problem ive seen for this issue
