I think I installed it on a lappy a few weeks back, but I am not into bits of fruit, and this was only done as a favour for a friend.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

I'm still a big fan of Mavericks.
There are a few programs that will not work on El Capitan such as earlier versions of Paragon NTFS and you have to upgrade to the latest version.
Another thing is iphotos is now photos I think so a bit of a learning curve
Also I don't like the new look dock

I still use Mavericks because I might also have to upgrade a few other applications.
I am a lazy 'tard and I don't 'fix' things if it ain't broke.
I installed El Capitan on my son's MBP and he is totally happy with it. It was not an upgrade but full install though.

I did the update and no issues.

I was told that it is always best to go with updates to get the latest for your computer.

    Up to the user obviously.

    Hahahaha....then 10.7.3 it is

At the end of the day, if it works OK then why change but as you say, there are programs that are not being supported on this earlier version.

Another factor is that as each new OS gets released it usually requires more processor power which can be a problem with older computers causing big slow downs.

Apple is not as bad as Microsoft in this regard but I remember they did this with iphone 4's running later ios. Turned a good phone into a slug.

I tend to stick with the software that works well for my computer (and phone) and not blindly assume latest is best because sometimes it isn't....look up Yosemite (OSX 10.10) wi-fi issues

Well, interesting to hear so many people like El Capitan on here.

After a few hours reading on the Update process and Backing Up etc.
I have come across so many old Mac users that say its the worst update since updates started in 1983.

Ofcourse, its always hard to define fact from fiction or just some grumpy user, but there does seem to be plenty of them.
Then again, i remember the same when Yosemite came out, all the WiFi issues.

Gawd, it was just as bad when i used Windows and a new update came out.

If you want to do a shorter hop from 10.7.3 to mavericks, let me know. I think I have a bootable usb stick with it on.

Yeah, i can see why you are using Mavericks after all the reading.

I havent updated my MacBook Pro 13" (Late 2011) since receiving it.
But i have updated Windows Machines heaps of times.

What is the go with these Mac OS X updates?
It looks like they save all your data and settings?

Half the reason for updating an OS was to have Clean Bare Bones OS again.
(getting rid of all kinds of nasties that collect and slow things down)

Whats the go with Mac OS X updates?

With a bootable usb you can do either. Update from within osx or clean install.

    Clean Install:
I think you hit option key on hearing the first beep and choose the usb. It allows to format (ext. journalised I think) then install the new os.
I often use it as an opportunity to upgrade the HDD to a bigger size or a faster one (SSD). That way you still have your old hdd to return to if you hate the new os or get data off it you forgot to backup all you needed

I did precisely the same as mandc.

My MBP was running Mountain Lion and the colour wheel was driving me nuts.
I found a 500MB drive in a $59 portable Hard drive enclosure that still had the SATA connection. Today they are all USB3, therefore unusable but you might still find one somewhere with a standard USB connection.
I swapped the drives and installed fresh Mavericks on the 500MB. Then I plugged the USB to SATA adaptor(leftover from the portable drive) into the old Mountain Lion drive and as an external drive copied all the data that I needed onto the MBP. I still occasionally check the old drive but the USB to SATA adaptor has come in handy 100's of times for checking old drives and repairs.

Hmmm. Just tried to install Mavericks on a mac mini at work (had El Capitan on it) and after formatting the drive the install refused to go giving the error: OS X application can't be Verified | Corrupted or Damaged during Downloading

You need to go into disk utilities..terminal and reset the date to 2015. 2016 throws up the error as Apple have decided you should not be installing Mavericks in 2016. I love the way Apple thinks it knows best and throws up crap error messages to disguise their agenda..

Thanks mandc, you've been really helpful.

I suppose by the time i get a HDD and new Internal Battery, the new OS X will be out
Not that it means it will be a good idea to update to it, until its been bug tested by the masses.
