Default Optus Sports package for VAST viewers

Reading the set-top box section of the Optus EPL Satellite website, it states...

You can also record to most external hard drives, up to a 1TB capacity (excluding Western digital hard drives).
Which means they're clearly using VAST Certified Altech UEC's. It also states....

ALREADY OWN A SATELLITE DISH AND SET-TOP BOX?
If you're an existing Optus Satellite or VAST viewer, talk to us today - you could be eligible to have the set-up fee waived.
To me, that means if you have an existing VAST Certified set-top box, you can use it to subscribe to Optus Sports channels. Particularly when the Optus set-up fee being 'waived' includes the cost of the set-top box.

There's other loops to jump through, like you must have an existing eligible Optus internet or mobile service, but this is still an interesting development for VAST viewers. I never thought we'd see the platform being used for direct-to-home pay TV.

I was more interested in this:

Optus Satellite Generation 2 Set-Top Box

    • Equipped with 12 satellite TV tuners -
record multiple channels simultaneously (allows you to record Premier League matches playing live at the same time)
    • You can also record to most external hard drives, up to a 1TB capacity (excluding Western digital hard drives).

Its a bit hard to follow, then again, i find a lot of Optus Deals hard to follow.

So, this is mostly a IPTV service that been promoted FREE to new Mobile Customers.
And a lot of the suggested methods are IPTV based.

Yet, if you don't live in a 3G/4G area, you can have this service via Satellite? For $20 a month?

    But not on your caravan

Good luck getting any info out of Optus ATM about adding to the VAST service, despite having an eligible Optus post-paid mobile you'll still have to fork out 20$ pcm

The way I interpret it is the service delivery isn't via a VAST receiver, but a separate Optus box.

the whole deal is a debarcle

1: you have to have a POST paid account not pre paid
2: The value of the service must be $x otherwise you cant register
3: they say it can be viewed via satalite if you have a vast setup
    BUT
they also say there is a $250 setup cost and they have a receiver to use

Fk me if you have vast then you have a receiver already that is capable of
being used and you already have a setup so why would you need to pay
    the $250 setup costs.

The first game is in 3 weeks time and they dont even know what day yesterday was even
    though they were there.

Stupid EPL for selling to optus at least you knew what you were getting when and how with foxtell.

To me it is an absolute joke full stop because
1: i have 18 months left to go on my mobile plan so wont be switching
2: i have 9 months left on my net plan and wont be moving
3: i am not eligible for vast

so in short im fooked because i can't get it what a fkn joke full stop unless i pay for another phone plan

Yeah, it's all a bit confusing.

Optus Satellite customers will receive a set-top box (STB) as part of the installation.

I'm still not seeing that a VAST decoder will be used, probably just using an existing dish/LNB, but with a separate decoder.

So what happens when the Soccer is over?
Is your new Optus decoder good for anything?

When i just spend a day looking at all the Mobile Deals, i saw Optus was offering this to Customers on the higher monthly plans.
I actually think it may have come with a Post-Paid SIM as well....

    Yep, it does

Its only IPTV based though, so no Sat Option here it seems.
I wonder how Optus receive the source content in the first place?

Via Sat or perhaps its HD IPTV direct from Europe?

VAST is an ideal platform to offer a PPV system as its already in place and has a rock solid encryption.
As OPTUS is the 'broadcaster' of the VAST signal, they already control who sees what on it now.

I would NOT be surprised to see this is already being used by OPTUS for other programing now like the Police/Court House/Prison links, School, Hospital and other educational links across Australia.
Of course, OPTUS like most Metro looking Companies thinks no one lives outside their Terrestrial Mobile areas, which would explain why you must be an Optus customer with either 3 or 4G service.
About 4~5 years ago Optus refused to sell me a Mobile because at the time, my address wasnt shown in their reception area and even today, my landline number doesnt come up on their area Data map.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

I hear you. But they do say the set-top box is part of the installation fee and then go on to say the set-up fee may be waived if you already have VAST. This suggests to me we will be able to use our existing VAST installs and likely activate Optus Sports on our existing set-top boxes. Also, it's well known that the Altech UEC DSD-4121 isn't compatible with Western Digital hard drives - another indicator that they're using 'VAST Certified' set-top boxes, possibly re-badged with an Optus Satellite logo on it somewhere.

From what I can tell, the sat option is open to anyone with an existing eligible Optus service with the EPL IPTV add-on. So the IPTV service is the minimum requirement. If you want a sat service you're free to get it for an extra $20 per month.

If it does include VAST decoders, I guess VAST CAM/cards could also be used.

I guess it is possible, as Optus own the satellite/s and own/manage the specs on VAST decoders and provide the service.

12 Tuner sounds like baloney, considering all their EPL channel are on the same transponder. Even my old Ultraplus can record multiple streams on the same transponder at the same time...

There was some Kaon branded units about 5 years ago that could handle as many as 6 per tuner.

    Its probably a dual tuner

The channels been up on C1/D3 for a couple of weeks

    Not so baloney

There's a guy over on Whirlpool due for a fresh satellite install today for EPL, will be interesting to see what he's got to report on the hardware side of things

I've been trying to get some info out of the Whirlpool Optus rep about how the VAST setup works for EPL, without any luck so far.

One thing I havent seen mentioned is that all the transmissions will have to be vertical unless the current crop of VAST receivers can be re softwared to accept Horizontal transmissions as well as fitting an electronic switch.
Also as an aside, nowh Macca has posted a report that a DSD4121 was installed for this service (EPL), could this idea be a reason why a dual out LNB was fitted or recommended as standard on all VAST installations?

the vast dual lnb recommendation was made well before optarse
    won the epl rights.

Optarse are inept and rorters to say the least where this is concerned
everyone carried on about how crook fox was /is but when you do the math and look at
the conditions placed on you by optarse just to watch 1 event well fox are angles

when fox carried the setanta they enabled it on your card and you could watch it on the box
    provided by fox

when bein started on fox they did the same as setanta

    but

optarse will enable the epl on your vast card but you must use their supplied
sat unit seriously if you have vast then you have a set top already
thus meaning you will have 2 set top units 1 for vast and 1 for epl

The guy on Whirlpool didn't have an existing satellite setup, so he's got a whole new install inc the UEC POS.

I'd hope if you have an existing VAST setup (either VAST box or 3rd party STB) then all Optus does is add the EPL entitlement to your card, so you shouldn't need an extra box just for EPL.

I wonder...if you walk in to an Optus shop and sign up for a month-to-month post paid mobile/data plan, and get EPL added to your VAST card, and then later pull the plug on EPL...how long before the pics disappear LOL

One question I am asking is why are OPTUS going back into DTTH broadcasting when they spat the dummy a few years ago and flogged it all off to Foxtel?
