    Haven't heard of that before.

When you say "can cause window shut down" what 'window'? Or do you mean Windows, as in the operating system?

    Does the computer turn off?

    What causes the crackling?

    Onboard audio?... loose connections?

    More info might be helpful.

An electrical/electronic hardware fault in the computer was probably the cause of the crackling sound, which also resulted in the operating system/Windows/computer shutting down.

It could have also been a faulty/loose fitting mains power plug problem.

Faulty speakers or speaker connections will not shut down the computer unless they are active speakers that are mains operated and have a very serious insulation fault in the power supply but the you would probably also smell smoke.

A faulty sound card or sound chip can shut down a computer, which I have experienced personally.
If it is a removable sound card then you can replace it.
If it is onboard sound then try disabling it in the BIOS and see if your computer still shuts down.

I have a big set of External Speakers that cause my Neighbours windows to shut down.
Not sure if she is using Vista Home or not though

If the speakers are still crackling there is a problem regardless of whether or not Windows XP has closed down!!

You need to find the cause of the crackling and fix it.

Are the speaker USB powered ? perhaps they are drawing to much current.

yeah, you hit the nail on the head, crackling speakers are powered by usb, and new speakers are ac adapter powered.
