Recently I purchased an ex lease PC that has Vista as its OS. I was a little disapointed and sceptical.
I never had much to do with Vista due to feedback i was hearing at its time of release so i held off and didn't upgrade my Win2k until well after Win7 had been released. I have to say that i am very impressed with Vista and think that maybe peoples concerns at the time were due to the very different look and feel to what everyone was used to, being XP and 2000. Looking back I think Vista got an unfair reputation. Every device i own works flawlessly and has intergrated with it easily. What i have found is when i look for automatic updates and when Vista looks for driver updates it just hangs searching. A quick look online shows many people having similar issues but a lot of these posts are old, 2009.
Id like to avoid spending the $$ to purchase Win10 and would like to get this Vista PC updating but not if its no longer supported. I cannot find a mention online from Microsoft other than one article stating support will be ceased completely by 2017.
Before i spend hours tweeking settings, Am i wasting my time trying to get updates working??

And another link:
Basically, support for Vista ended on April 10, 2012
Updating drivers, and getting a lot of devices to work with Vista was one of the major issues with it from day 1.

MMM Explains the update hangs..
For $99.00, ill use this PC until it dies..
I'll do a compatability check against Win10 when this happens,
Thanks all...

If Vista works for you, why bother attempting to update it?
If it works, leave it alone.

Is an update to Windows 7 an option?
Yep, that's right. Because as has been said @Al Bundy, Windows Vista is not developed and can not be upgraded to Windows 10 because it is different between Windows Vista and Windows 7, 8 and 10. Should did you use Windows 10 that is currently widely used and gain more a lot of support. Options for moving operating system I think is the best choice.
The free 7 to 10 upgrade has also now finished.
I would upgrade it to Windows 7. You can probably download it somewhere and there is an activator for it thats the best I have ever seen.
Sorry, i'm forgot it
If you want to upgrade Windows 10, now you must buy the license, thanks @Admin for remind me
There is still a legitimate free upgrade to Windows 10 available, the thread details were listed above. As rightly pointed out though windows 7 etc is required.

The real bugbear with Vista was the absolutely terrible quality of the drivers that shipped on the initial DVD. I had a PC with an ATI Radeon 2400HD card and the built in Intel HD graphics. The driver for the ATI card was so bad that often the PC would BSOD before it even completed installing. The Intel driver usually, but not always, survived long enough to be able to get the PC up and running in order to load a newer driver for the Intel hardware, and then download and install the ATI one.
Just a note to this, Just because Microsoft no longer supports Vista, doesn't mean they will cut off all access to Windows updates. When Microsoft stops supporting the os, they will no longer make any new updates or security patches for the software. They will also not offer you any online phone or technical support. You will still be able to get all updates that were released up to the cutoff of support.
If it is locking up there is likely something wrong. I would recommend going into control panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer (or start > Run > eventvwr.msc) and have a look for warnings or failures to get an idea as to why it is not going anywhere.
Another option is to do the following
open command prompt as administrator (shift click and run as administrator) type in c> Net stop wuauserv
delete the contents under "c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download"
then under cmd prompt run, this c> Net Start Wuauserv
now retry the updates
Another thing to consider is Windows 7 is what Windows Vista was supposed to be. Windows 7 is very stable, and if your computer runs Vista, it should run seven fine. Otherwise, skip 8 and go to 10.
