Default File extraction from dead hard drive

    Hi all,
Just after a place I can take my hard drive to so the files can be taken off it.

Last night I could hear my hard drive try to spin up then followed by a tick sound. It would continue doing this indefinitely so I turned to computer off by holding down the power button.

I tried rebooting and did a hard drive test and not to my surprise, it came back and wait it failed.

It won't boot to Windows so I guess a component inside the HDD has failed. Is there anywhere good I can take it to (Sysney) who can take all the files of? I'd say the failure will be in the platter or head assembly so not sure how successful the recovery will be.

The computer is HP Probook 6540b running Windows 7. The hard drive is a Seagate 500GB Serial ATA.

    Any help appreciated.

The topic has been covered many times before, so a SEARCH of the forum would lead to helpful information.

Similarly, a search engine would also yield desired results, i.e. .

Such a search leads to several companies in Sydney specialising in HDD data recovery, i.e. , etc.

Now, provided the drive is functional, it could be that you can recover the data yourself if you connected the drive to a different working computer.

You could also download and burn to cd a copy of Hirens Boot CD, which will allow you boot the computer from CD (if Boot Order is first set from HDD to CD in BIOS). Once booted, choose to run Windows XP. Once in XP open Windows Explorer and then attempt to read the faulty hard drive. If using Hirens, I suggest version 10 as some of the later versions are not quite as versatile. For info go to . A download link, Filename: Hirens.BootCD.10.0.zip, appears in the yellow panel towards the bottom of the page

Thanks for the reply Tristen. I confirmed that the HD DVD needs to be taken to the experts for data extraction.

I found this place which works out well for me. Very close to my work.

I'll post the results when I find out if it worked

update on the dead HDD issue.

The guy from total data recall called me back this afternoon with the news. He told me that the head unit needs to be replaced and hopefully the data can be recovered if the Platters aren't scratched/damaged.

If the files can be extracted, the cost will be $1,100 (economy - 2 to 3 weeks). If I want it as a priority, the cost will be $1,900. Economy is fine for me.

If he replaces the head unit and cant extract the files, then the cost will be $350. Expensive lesson learnt. Back up your files.

In the meantime, I've ordered a Samsung 500GB SSD (850 EVO). I'll install that in the laptop and load Windows 10 to get it going again.

    Cheers

CLOUD? I don't believe in it!

I refuse to entrust valuable (and private) data to others, particularly to some nebulous, so-called "CLOUD".
