did you google
task manager?
I am trying to get a program to run on start up.
Lets just call it "file.exe".
I placed a copy of the shortcut into the startup directory but it won't start.
Task manager/startup says impact not measured yet. What the hell !...It says restart to measure but that doesn't happen.
What is going on ?
P.S. I've already done the google thing.

No. I didn't know you can start programs with task manager.
Anyway, what I did do is make a bat file pointing to the program (like I used to do with older win OS's) and placed it in the startup folder but that didn't work either.
If I manually run the bat file, the program starts as far as putting an icon in the task bar then it disappears again after a second. It might help if an error message was displayed.
The program itself runs fine but there's something really odd about that startup folder.
The computer has been in the back shed for a month so I brought it in to do updates, maybe that'll help.
I guess if I'm supposed to use task scheduler to start programs then by just copying a shortcut to startup might cause broken links or something.
I'll check out scheduler once the updates finish.

Is there no way a person can tell something to start on start-up by loading it's name into msconfig somehow? (I don't know, I haven't checked before.)

OK, just checked it, gives a link to startup in task manager under the startup tab, so I reckon Philquad's answer is probably the answer.

This article may help.

Not as far as I know.
It was always easy to just put it the windows startup folder.
Actually something else that really annoys the crap outta me is is the security. Isn't there some way to go to one thing and change the settings so I have access to everything that locks me out on MY computer ?

Updates finished.
I run scheduler and created a new task to run file.exe when the computer starts. Also ticked run as administrator.
Didn't work.
What now ?
My only guess is, something then in Windows is stopping it from executing when the program is called up to start.
Security, firewall, app crashing, something.
Might be a little silly, but just to check, go to the search bar next to the start button, type in msconfig, go into system configuration, then you'll see there is a general tab. There is normal startup, diagnostic startup, and selective startup. Under selective startup, there is a tick-box for "Load startup items". You may have to make sure that is checked. You may be checked under normal startup (option 1, which I guess is standard), and I'm assuming you have to say selective startup.
If it's not that, then I'm not really sure.

I spent all night trying to get this program to run.
I went away from placing the exe file manually into the startup folder because it just wasn't working so I moved on to using scheduler to instigate the program as suggested.
Only more grief !!
I found that to set up and edit scheduler I needed a password. Great !!! .. When I installed win 10 I didn't set a password. I hate having to log on all the time.
I created a password then spent the next half hour trying to figure out how to start up and log on without password input. Grrrr !!!
Now it runs the program on startup but the bloody thing runs in the background. I can see that in Task Manager.
I have run out of ideas.
When I get this fixed, computer will be used as a jukebox. It will be stand alone and not connected to the internet so it will not need any security.
What's next to try ?
yea
just use this

If all you want it for is as a jukebox, why persevere with windoze, go to linux or even, DOS.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
Thanks for that mate.
I tried the EXE file in the startup folder and with scheduler.
I tried a BAT pointing to the exe file in the startup folder and with scheduler.
No joy.
I downloaded the quick startup program you suggested but that didn't work either, at first !
There is a setting in there to delay execution so I set it for 30 secs. and now the jukebox runs on startup perfectly, just gotta wait a little longer.
So what's gone wrong with scheduler ? or even the startup folder for that matter ?
This computer had windows 10 installed plus a few little programs then put it away in the shed, so I can't see how it's had enough run time to become corrupted.

i use this ol retro job

Thanks, I did download that but haven't looked at it yet.
The one I'm trying to get going is VRockola. and it did work real nice (and even run on startup like I originally wanted) until yesterday.
I installed that quick-startup program and it done the job BUT now there's another couple of issues.
Volume, mute and pause are operated by keys and now don't work as they should.
1/ Trying to adjust the volume shows on the screen as a slider bar and it goes up and down with button presses as it should but the sound doesn't change.
2/ Mute shows on the screen that it's muted but the volume is still the same.
3/ One key is pressed to alternate between pause and resume. It will pause but resume causes the song to stop altogether and will also skip a couple of extra songs in the list, but does not resume playing.
Seams like something has become corrupted.
I have reinstalled Vrockola, Reinstalled the sound drivers and Tested with quick-startup removed.
The only other thing I can think of that might be the cause is the win 10 updates.
What do you think I can try now ?
Maybe redo the computer is the way to go, esp since it will be dedicated to one main task.
Is win 10 able to create an install disc which includes copies of the downloaded update files on the HDD ?
That way I could format the drive and reinstall win 10 without needing to spend hours and using up my internet quota.
does it really have to run on windows 10?? Could you possibly run it on Win 7 if you are going to start again.
If it isn't going to be hooked to the net clean install Win 7 and then leave it. For what it is 10 still has numerous issues where people are dictated as to what they can do with Win10 by MS
