    Default How does Chromecast work?

Well I know what Chromecast does, but I would like to know how it does it.

If I use Chrome Browser to say, cast netflix to my Chromecast TV, I see both the videos played on the computer and tv at once.

If I use the Netflix App on my phone, once the video starts on the TV the phone stops showing the video...

    So,

    1. does Chrome browser "re-broadcast" the video to the chromecast?

If so, its rather a inefficient use of wireless bandwidth where my laptop will wireless stream the video from the internet and then sent it to the chromecast again over wireless.

    2. Does the Netflix App send "commands" to the Chromecast to "go and collect data from 'url blah blah' and the Chromecast does all the smarts and the app acts like a remote????

    Hope I have explained myself???

I thought it just send the link to the Chromecast to play and you could just shut your laptop (tablet, phone, etc) and it would keep playing.
But what you have explained above, seems to suggest it can do it both ways.

    There is Mirroring, then Casting.

It hands over the stream to the Chromecast, so no longer requires your PC/phone

Sorry to say, your theory didn’t work.

When using Chrome Browser and setting a video in motion casting to my TV. if I close the browser or go to another site, the casting stops.

So with Chrome, the PC is still required to remain on the page that is being cast.

I watch AFL thru Crown app on android. It only works when the app is operational, if the app falls out so does the cast, it stalls, stops etc and i have to keep resetting it. I don't complain as it is free but can be a pain

Interesting, I have zero issues with this. I can even turn my phone completely off and the Chromecast continues until the end of the video, playlist etc

Ok, to be fair, I was using Linux Mint and Google chrome. The moment I closed down the browser the cast stopped.

When mt internet connection works fine, the videos run smooth. I got no such issues usually. What kind of phone do you use? It appears Android or iOS is a matter here.

Whatever, another thing I want to say to you. I liked your signature very very much
You put the best sentence there which represents the Central Limit Theorem.

I know WHAT it does, I want to know the in's and out's of the protocol behind its operation.

How does it pass over the video to the host form the PC/Iphone/etc.

As I have explained above, I get mixed results. Depending on the application, I can shut down the app and still stream to the chromecast, yet with other methods, ie, chrome browser,I can not and have video playing on both screens, then as I believe, using twice the bandwidth, one to the pc and then to the TV.
