umm
i dunno, but, i know if you install bitdefender free it renders the ms defender useless (so as theres not 2 av running)
maybe install it, then remove it, & ms defender might right its self?
Wasnt quite sure which of the software/pc related forums to post this in.......
Issue, just upgraded from win 8.1 to win 10.
Was running Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).
Now Windows 10 has Windows Defender (WD).
After upgrade, WD wont turn on as system reports "have current virus software active."
Look to unistall MSE and can not find it in either the "Programs and Features" or in the "C:\Program Files" areas, as has been suggested in some links searched.
Been googling endlessly for a few days and "everybody" has a magic fix that will do it, provided you can find the MSE uninstaller!!!!!!!!! or download their wonderful system fix it tool.
Not even microsoft has a suitable answer on their forums or site.
Austech is an endless source of clever people full of tidbits of info.
I now drop to my knees in front of my fellow Austechians, HELP!!!!!!!!!!
Any info as to either getting WD running and active or removing the faux MSE remnants that Windows thinks is there and stopping WD from running would be most welcome.

Thanks Phil, my issue is that WD wont load in the first place because W10 thinks that I already have a AV running, MSE.
I cant uninstall MSE or even install it so I can uninstall it.
Apparently, reading forums, MS is aware of it????

I think Phil is on the right track, as you say you can't find MSE to uninstall it; it's probably partially uninstalled but the main process or INI file is still active.
Bitdefender will find it if it's running & disable it, the when you uninstall Bitdefender, W10 will give you an alert that you are currently unprotected/at risk & ask you to turn on WD.
I would try this that i found, looks like the go as 87 people found it usefull in the exact scenario you have.
Source:Here is the solution to those having problems with Microsoft Security Essentials not being removed prior to Windows 10 upgrade and then being left with it still running after the upgrade.
Open File Explorer
Browse to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\
Locate the file Setup.exe, right click on it and choose properties
Click on the Compatibility tab
At the bottom of the tab click 'Change Settings for all users'
On the next screen check the box for 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:' and choose Windows 7
Click OK
Click OK
From the taskbar search box type cmd.exe and right click and choose 'Run As Administrator'
This will open an elevated command prompt as Administrator
In the command prompt window copy/paste or type the following:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\setup.exe /x /disableoslimit
Choose to Uninstall
Once this has finished, reboot and Microsoft Security Essentials will be gone and Windows Defender should be running correctly.
Failing all the above you could roll back to Win8.1, uninstall MSE then reapply the upgrade to W10.

Hi tiny, I tried your posted fix but my computer did not have the MSE folder in c:\program files
I'll try bitdefender

Don't use ANYTHING Microsoft for ANY security . . . go to outside software sources, to whomever you choose, but DO NOT USE ANYTHING Microsoft creates for security!
A great big thanks to you all.
Austech members do it again!!!
Installing bitdefender revealed that the remnants of Microsoft Security Essentials was not the issue that was preventing Windows Defender from loading properly but SpyBot was.
Once bitdefender asked to uninstall Spybot to load itself WD just loaded and ran as it should.
I then uninstalled Bitdefender and the win10 install is all peaceful and no messages of issues are given.
Again, thanks

That's excellent & explains why you couldn't find the MSE folder, as it had been dissolved/assimilated by W10 or WD.
