    Question ABC1 Switching to HD on VAST?

    I see that the ABC is advertising that ABC1 is going to switch to HD and 24 to SD in December. I assume that it is terrestrial only but they don't say.

    Does anyone know whether this change is coming to VAST and when?

    I would be very surprised that except for the technicians, the ABC know they broadcast on VAST so I wouldnt be holding my breath waiting for this to happen on VAST

    Agree - apart from SBS, High Definition on VAST appears just about dead and buried. Terribly sad to see this happen; a return to the good old Aurora days. The standard definition channels also appeared badly affected by digital compression. Why don't they switch back to 4:3 aspect ratio - the transition back to Aurora would be complete - but at least we would have half decent picture quality.

    Very disappointed that there is not one mention of VAST on any publications about the new HD channel. It's as if it doesn't exist. Every question on the FAQ assumes you can only get television 2 two ways - terrestrially or via Foxtel. No doubt the ABC will fail to use the 800 or 802 information channels either to communicate any changes.

    Hi Guys,
    Currently my SatKing 800-CA show :

    ABC 24 as HD with pixel packing as 1280 x 720 x 50
    ABC1 as SD : 720 x 576 x 25

    70 = HD 1920 x 1088 x 25

    in WA.

    68 Racing.com = SD
    73 = SD
    63 = HD 1920 x 1088 x 25.

    Why is there 73 and 63 ? same prog - diff def !

    Cheers

    The SD version of 7mate is for North-West viewers only. I don't get it down here on either VAST or terrestrial. See below table:

    GWN launched it when Seven started showing WCE and Freo games on 7mate. I think they wanted to ensure North-West businesses could still get advertising spots during the matches, like they always could when the matches were on the GWN7 GNW split.

    Not entirely sure why they allow VAST viewers in NW to see both 63 and 73.

    Been a while since I switched on the VAST box, fired it up tonight to watch the Crowded House gig, noticed that all the ABC feeds are leaps and bounds better quality than my terrestrial broadcast, anyone want to investigate further on this one?

    EDIT: Nevermind! just some really good upscaling

    Agree with you - ABC main channel on VAST is about as good as it gets in terms of standard definition picture quality. The Crowded House gig last night was very watchable.

    I keep a VAST cam and card in my XCruiser simply to watch SBS HD which comes out a whole lot better than the local terrestrial version that seems to be affected by macro blocking and the like. Apart from that, VAST is a non event for me, and appears to be reverting to a mostly standard definition affair. For example, none of the commercial main channels on the Central/Eastern footprint (Imparja Southern Cross Ten and Seven) show any signs of switching to HD. In fact, the guy in the control room at Imparja advised that HD is simply not going to happen unless government funding increases.

    One HD is obviously now impacted by a standard definition feed from Ten with no native HD content.

    Look forward to ABC in HD on VAST.

    Well they did it without telling anyone. ABC main channel now HD mp4 1080i on both 2 and 21. ABC24 is now SD.

    Will have to wait for some decent programming (or the NYE Fireworks) to see what difference it makes. Fortunately with VAST means can watch multiple midnights QLD NT NSW/Vic/Tas SA WA (if I can stay up that late!)

    Any idea of the bitrate?

    Only have HUMAX decoder looking at it, and no idea how to check bitrate. But check of AVForums shows ABC HD: 3.17 Mbps on Terrestrial. And that, "All studios feed their output to MediaHub in Ingleburn NSW. Uncompressed HD signals require 5 times the data rate which costs more connect between each studio centre to MediaHub. The MPEG-4 compression should only happen once, otherwise the pictures deteriorate, so this only happens in the output of MediaHub feeding the VAST/terrestrial transmitter network." So I assume VAST is the same.

    The only problem is that news and probably most of the local programming is actually upscaled SD, so not really true HD, except for HD-sourced programming, mostly purchased from overseas or outside producers.

    Now that the picture quality has been upgraded, we look forward to the program quality being upgraded as well - who needs high definition pictures of mediocre game shows?????

    The three ABC HD services on 11805V are running between 4 and 6 Mbps
