Default Sus Indian came to my door wanting to reconfigure my working NBN fibre box

An Indian young man in workers gear and a computer printout of addresses for my street and carrying a knapsack said he'd being
instructed to change the NBN access number in the box on the side of my house he asked me to show him where the NBN box
is located but it was installed too high for him to access so he asked me if he could borrow a ladder which i declined.
I rang iinet NBN and they got on to NBNco who said no work was scheduled at my address and that if he reconfigured the box
i'd lose my internet connection immediately as the current number had been what iinet are using for my account.
The indian said the numbers for nbn in my street were wrong and needed changing and he was contracted to do it.
I haven't received any letters from NBNco about this and iinet said they would have been notified of the change of nbn box number.

What do you think the Indian chap was up to?

A thief finding out who was home? Asking to borrow your ladder is _very_ suss. I can't imagine any proper workman (not likely to have a trade, methinks) asking to borrow your ladder. If the ladder was faulty, his insurance wouldn't cover him etc etc.

Maybe but my local handyman was in my yard mowing lawns at the time so he had no reason to think nobody would be at home so he could break in.
He might have been after money for playing with my NBN box possibly though he never mentioned anything about payment though.
Or maybe he planned on falling off the ladder then extorting money from me

Well at least you let your ISP/RSP know so they can report it to Police.
    Actually they probably won't bother.
Maybe you should report it to the Police so they can find out what he's up to, as he is probably still canvassing the area.
    Cheers, Tiny

Smartphones have Cameras, take his picture or ask if he minds.
Then ask about his Public Liability Insurance.

There has to be a money making reason for wanting to gain access to the 'Fibre Box' or he wouldnt have called.

Good move, but I also recommend notifying police and advising that NBNco have confirmed he is not working for them.

He may be involved with other burglaries, thefts or other offences , so it may be a lead that is useful to police.

You could imagine the response from the Gullible, Female, Teenage or Elderly cant you.
Candy from a baby in most cases.

Who knows what his intentions were, but it is very seldom these days to have a worker from any Service or Provider cold call you.
You generally get a letter of 2 notifying you to expect work between 2 dates and between certain business hours.

A different Indian came to my door yesterday with a ladder with a different story yesterday this time he wanted to spruce up my NBN box i asked for id and he showed me photo id
with a small nbn logo on it like a visa card he said he wasn't going to cut anything and wouldn't lose internet connection he showed me photos of a neighbours box he'd done
in the street. I watched him do it neatened everything with cable ties he said he uploads the photos to NBN server to get payment and was self employed.
It seems to be above board except a different reason to access the NBN box.

Still sounds a bit weird though. Why would NBN co think that the NBN box needs "tidying up"? Wouldn't they have hired installers that were competent in doing the job properly in the first place? Did I just answer my own question? LOL

Have you seen how all this out sourcing works?
It is a complete fooking mess....

Contract, that is then sub contacted, that is palmed off...
I must admit, we have been getting the NBN installed in our town and the town im in now, they are working all kinds of hours, 7am on a Sunday morning, 8pm on a week night... They are in personal vehicles, with standard work clothing, nothing corperate or labelled.
Even here where they have spent 2 weeks digging up the street to do the Cabinet Pre Installs, its just a Traffic Managment compnay, a Self Employed fella with his Nissan Patrol towing a Mini Excavator, a local Sparky to run the power to the pillar, some Conduit installers and that is it.
There is nothing to signify whom they are.... Just some fellas doing what the paper work tells them to do.
It is just your typical Government contracting nightmare

I will credit the Indians though, they seem to be the only ones doing it (Final Commissioning), so good on them for working hard and all sorts of hours to get the job done.

If you have ever worked for ABB, Vision Stream, or Telstra, then you know what i mean, they are hopeless.
They just live in this perfect world where nothing ever goes wrong, yet the guys out in the field deal with all the fook ups and complications, cutting up peoples drive ways, dealing with existing services, etc

Sounds very suspicious. I don't think I would let him near anything without actually checking with NBN. Perhaps watching him work stopped him from installing or doing anything he had in mind?

I actually not sure if it is possible at all, just a question to educate myself on NBN.
Let's say I have access to a working NBN box and get IP and maybe some sort of ID from the box, would it be possible for me to configure another box which is connected to the same fibre cable or maybe not so that I can get free NBN connection? Free for me but will allow me to charge people let's say half price for pirated connection.
