So you are using a third party program to access Hotmail ?
Have you tried using another so you can check if the issue is with Thunderbird ?
I have been using Gmail for 10 years, I certainly dont miss those problems.

I have had the same hotmail address for over 15 years.
I access hotmail on Apple Mac via thunderbird, desktop on win 10 using thunderbird, iphone using inbuilt mail application, ipad blah blah.
Only the last few days have I had issues connecting.
I can access hotmail by web browser, with no issues. I even changed my password and can still access via browser.
I have checked pop, smtp and imap servers and all are as required.
encryption is set as per microsoft suggestions in individual platforms I use.
Ive also used thunderbird for many many years and no problems.

But can you access on any other third party email application ? Pick one, download it and try it. You firstly need to work out whether it is a Thunderbird related issue or a Hotmail issue. (I have no idea what iphones and ipads use, I dont use Apple products).
If the problem has only started in recent days with no changes from you, its either one or the other. Process of elimination is the easiest way to find out which.

Are you using a particular version number Pork ?
This may help you.
Basically everyone with a Hotmail/Outlook/Live email address is being progressively moved to a new protocol with no pop3 & different settings for Imap.
I actually got an email warning from Microsoft, with a link to a patch that would make the transition seamless, about 8 months ago to tell of me of this; when I installed the patch it farked my Email client altogether so I had to uninstall the patch to get everything working again.
A couple of weeks ago one of my addresses stopped working, it's a Live.com.au address.
To fix it I deleted the account in my Email Client (win Live mail 2012), which was set up as Pop3, & then add it again as an imap account.
Microsoft has beenplaying around withmigrating which is affecting many people!
Note: that the Outgoing Server in the Microsoft Article linked above did not work for me, had to change to smtp-mail.outlook.com
May be your issue too.
Edit: forgot to mention the new port numbers are significant. Incoming 993 ; outgoing 587.
For those that haven’t been affected yet, just wait; it's a slow migration, so you wont know until it don't work.
Settings should be relevant for all Microsoft free addresses, Hotmail/Outlook/Live, as they are all grouped on the Outlook servers.

Make sure when you set up your account even with a different email client, that you manually set up the IMAP server addresses & port numbers as the auto config on my email client sets it up wrong.
EDIT: also make sure that the Log on is set to clear text authentication as in my post above; as the Secure Password Authentication will give you issues like you already have.
Found this setting in Thunderbird is different, it's set to Authentication: Normal Password.
EDIT2: Just out of curiosity I downloaded latest version Mozilla Thunderbird, installed it on W10 & allowed it to auto config my@live.com.au address & it worked perfectly, signs in & checks emails.
Checked port numbers & server address settings all correct for the new server protocol. Got me buggered why yours no work.

How did you go porkop?
Microsoft email servers went down around 5 days ago, failed to allow anyone to check their emails other than logging in via a browser.
I had problems too, but they are now resolved and do have new port numbers.
Probably not the best choice, but I use Outlook 2016 using POP3 for hotmail and two private emails servers.
