    Default PC builder in Ballarat?

I have an old Dell Inspiron 530 that is really getting tired and I would like a new system. But looking at a new Dell leaves me with little scope for choosing the features that I want. Nor does Lenovo. But I have no desire to try to cobble one together from parts (although that would probably be the cheapest option - there are just too many ways you can go wrong without doing weeks of research, and even then ...)

Does anyone know of a reputable company in/near Ballarat, Victoria that will build to my needs without requiring me to remortgage the house? ... And provide appropriate after sales support (I usually buy the 3 yr support from Dell)? I'm not in the market for anything out of this world, I'm not a gamer or high-end user, but want to be able to get what I want, not what some multinational company tells me I can have.

Why don't you have a go at building one for yourself, it's not that hard and there are plenty here who can keep you on the straight and narrow.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

    Thanks Isemmens.

My big worry about that is not so much the assembling (not much more than a fiddly jigsaw puzzle), but finding the right bits to work together, and who to call on if there's a hiccough when its all up and running (either straight away, or down the track in 12/18 months ... I used to be quite good with technology, but that was 20 years ago and now I'm just an old fart who'd like to think he knows more than he does. Finding the utilities and expertise to trouble-shoot a problem would BE a problem!)

Anyway, the kind of system I would be looking at might include the following (feel free to comment on my selections - advice/suggestions on individual parts/combinations/'why would you bother with ...?'/etc, but I'm not made of cash so want to keep costs under control):

    • 6/7 Gen Intel core i7 (or better?)
    • Win 10 Pro (actually would like to be able to dual boot(or use an emulator) with an Android iteration as well)
    • 12G RAM
    • Dedicated graphics (Nvidia? Or …)
    • 3(+?) x internal drive bays (preferably 3.5")
    • 1 x optical drive (BR?)
    • 2/4 front USB 3.0 (/3.1?)
    • 2/4 rear USB 2.0 (mouse/keyboard/etc)
    • 4/5 rear USB 3.0 (/3.1?) (inc internal USB 3.0/1?)
    • 256G SSD (OS/Software)
    • 2TB internal HDD (docs/files/etc)
    • Rear HDMI out(/in)
    • All the usual sound outs/ins
    • Gigabit ethernet
    • Wireless n/g/b/ac
    • Bluetooth 4
    • Multi-card reader
    • Range of PCI/PCIe slots for future expansion
    • MoBo to suit all of above
    • Case/power supply to fit all of above

As you can tell, I'm trying to make this as 'future-proof' as possible (without knowing when/if they release the new
generation of computer hardware eg optical processing/etc.)

Anyway, thoughts/suggestions/etc gratefully received, but please use small words as I think my brain is shrinking as I get older ... (If you think I'm barking mad, please be polite when you say so)

if you dont feel comfortable building one yourself ( quite easy and plenty help experience here to help )

you could take a drive down to altona MSY you can see online what they
already build or see if they can do a special order.

But i really think you could build one easily enough yourself when you look at the forum you asked and
look at all the experience there is in here.
dont say linux if i wanted it id install it

Thanks Philquad. I WAS thinking of somewhere nearby in case I had to get it 'repaired', but I guess that's something that I could talk to them about during the trial build phase and see if they have an affiliate here in Ballarat ...

Amazing how another few brains can make things so much easier ... especially when mine is so old and tired

Depending upon your choice of MOBO you may not necessarily need to worry about a video card. For the "average" noddy, unless you are into gaming or high end video, onboard video will probably work quite well.

When I built my last machine I just looked at the specs of a machine similar to my desire and then priced the parts accordingly.

yeah i'm into gaming so i always get the top stuff of the day when i buy.
If not a gamer that machine can do anything you want and if you're not gaming pull one card out and keep it as a spare.
Anyway for the price he can afford i doubt he would get anything close.
