Ok, so for very little money, you can buy a ELM327 OBD2 port interface
Which allows connectivity between your Vehicle and Windows, Mac, Android or iPhone via Bluetooth, WiFi or USB.
ELM327 Interface comes in many variants, from many places, even Kogan sells one.
Typically looking like this:
Or this
The full range
So that has sorted out basic communication
The rest is up to up supported the software is you are using.
From the basic Torque App to Paid Version of TOAD and others that promise great abilities.
Here is a list of ELM softwares you can try with your ELM327 interface
Anyone use any of the above or a different software?
Have the abilities been getting better?
This site in Queensland has some more detailed info on the ELM327 range of interfaces

i have a bluetooth version and cable version and have used
scanxl.pro = very good
TotalCarDiagnostics = good
EasyOBDII - OBD2Spy = quick and easy to reset a engine light error
Plus they are cheap enough been thinking of grabbing a wireless model that will work with the ipad
one thing with the bluetooth version is some android tabs - phones dont connect for some reason
i had issues with a Z1 but the galaxy tab had no issues.

watching this thread - Ive been thinking about getting either the Scanguage PRO or the Toad
I have used both a bluetooth and wifi version of ELM327 with Torque ... it has allowed me to see fault codes and to clear ... for me this has been more than enough
i went with the Scanguage 2 , found plenty of Toyota codes to customise it on the web
Have the app OBD Car Doctor loaded on the Samsung, and have ordered an elm327.
I have an annoying error on my car atm....I want to reduce the guessing....
The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.
to my knowledge it can only display various parameters and clear engine fault codes . there are a few generic ones built in like fuel economy , distance to empty , RPM , volts , engine temps , etc. All this via the OBD port only. It would be better if you could have it raise alarms at set trigger points but doesnt have that function.
to customise it ( called X guages ) you enter codes which correspond to the memory locations that the car's ECU stores that data in. So the unit interrogates a certain location , recieves the block of data , does the maths and displays the info. in my case by using codes found online i monitor the engine water temp , EGT temp , DPF temps and trans fluid temps. these are the most common things to monitor for modern diesels .
