Steinbauer Power Module
I posted this on another forum.
Hi I have a 2011 Mercedes 513 Sprinter Motorhome. While checking under the bonnet, I noticed a "black box" hanging loose, it had come loose from the adhesive velcro, I re glued and remounted this unit. The markings on it were Steinbauer, and Google told me what it was.
My questions are
Does it make much difference?
Can it damage or affect the engine?
Should I leave it ?
Thanks in advance

They are the best on the market. Leave it there or you will be disappointed....
It won't hurt it...
It should have a red power / black earth and a white or grey switched earth to turn it on and off.

The Following User Says Thank You to hoe For This Useful Post:
they are basically a customised power module. there are many types as Hoe mentioned. They intercept the signals coming from various sensors and fool the engine ECU into making decisions that result in increased power. The usual trick is to increase boost and adjust injection to suit , but they can do other things like delete the EGR and increase DPF burn times.
best way to check is to take it to a diesel tuning specialist ( and one who knows Merc ) that can interrogate the module and see what parameters have been programmed in. In general , Dealers will wipe warranty if one is fitted and they always know if one is fitted as they can dump the ECUs data to see what has been fed into it.
the steinbauer unit is a piggyback ecu, it modifies the data coming out of the stock ecu and doesnt alter any sensor readings going to the stock ecu.
basicallly they add duration to the stock injector pulse at the appropriate times. they dont alter factory timing, rail pressure etc.
once the unit is physically removed they wont know it was there....
