Sounds like you've answered your own question.
It's highly probable you've damaged the motherboard (and the RAM).
Hi everyone I had been away from computers for A while following other interests for A while so Im a bit rusty.
Today I got A extra 4 gig of ram for my computer to up the ram to 16 put the ram in the slot plugged it back in and flipped the power switch at the back.
Only the graphics card fan came on and nothing else I did google for some answers but most of them ended up being plugs had come lose then there was A hot plastic smell not strong but you could smell it and the ram had a black mark on one of the little pins. Turns out my motherboard doesn't support that speed ram not known at the time though.
I have tried switching the original two ram sticks around with no luck my fear is I fried the motherboard but its been A while since I done much with computers so some help would be great.
The computer started as A complete acer aspire m3970 but changed the psu to A higher output when I changed the video card to a gtx 750 4 gig everything els is still original I no its not A great starting point for a Pc but its what I got at the time with my main hobby taking most of my money haha.

Thanks I had my suspicions but since im not upto date on stuff I just wanted some other opinions before I went out for new parts.
Yep, black marks, hot plastic smell - it's fried.
Unplug everything except the MOBO if you get beeps then they will, at least tell you that something is still working, but I'm not holding much hope.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
try cleaning the burnt contacts in the ram slot
Thanks for the reply the burn marks are on the ram stick itself but I think I'll just wait till the new year and buy a new system.
As I said earlier I'm not upto speed with what's good and what to stay away from anymore and was wondering if I post a few links to systems available from shops I usually buy stuff from could anyone advise me on what is the best for the price range I will have which will be around $1000/1300

This guys have great computers and decent prices.
But depends what you need a comp for. The ones i linked are capable of playing games so on if you only need like a home pc for surfing the web playing you tube you can buy decent ones cheaper.
Again choose one for your needs.
