    Default What modem for NBN

OK, we are going to have NBN access by beginning of March. So just doing some research and am wondering of what type of modem is better if any.

We are going to be hooked up to FTTN and iinet have a modem that you can purchase from them. Does anyone know if they are any good? or do you recommend another type? as my modem is not compatible
I need to have wifi because of the kids ipads etc but how good is it

Haven't decided if I'll go with iinet but most providers are ok with having your own modem so what do members recommend.

    cheers

Use the modem supplied by your provider, unless you want to risk having your port locked by NBN.

WhiteOx is on the money: the safest option is to use whatever your ISP sells or gives away, since they should be able to talk you through fixing any problems.

Note that with FTTN, there is no modem: you have a router, although I've noticed some ISP staff insist on calling it a modem. I currently use a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite and am very happy with it.

I got some bad advice from the ISP myself when setting up the new NBN connection. Basically all you need is a router that supports PPPoE, no modem involved. My connection is FTTH but it should be the same simply connecting a router that can negotiate with the ISP for you.

You're right. Too many acronyms in this business.

FTTN (fibre to the node) requires the use of a VDSL modem (with router if required.

FTTH (fibre to the home) does not need a modem (only a router).

Most mid to top end modems are VDSL compliant these days.....

Maybe they are but Do they comply with NBN's specs?
Since NBN won't release a list of compliant modems you run the risk of having your port locked if they cause interference to the network.
As well as wasting your cash.

The modem supplied by your provider complies with all of NBN's requirements.

    Some info here:

My billion 8800 works fine apparently, but as I won't be getting NBN until at least 2020 it'll be out of date anyway.....

Yeah I've seen that list, the only nbn registered one's are used by providers.
The others are a lottery, they might work but you still risk having your port locked.
It would be better if NBN released a list of compatible devices that were able to be used on their network.

So what's the problem with them why wont they release a list, or is because they really have no idea either?

This is new shi.t for me.

    Question!!

At the moment we have a Modem router I think Billion Bipac NXL 7800 using ADSL2 and we using the 4 Ports on it as PORT 1 for the Main Desktop Computer (0.5 M away from the Modem) Port 2 for another Computer 2M away, Port 3 is used by all the stuffing (35M away) in the Sat TV Room and in there I have a Hub Switch with 8 Devices plugged into the Hub Switch, and Port 4 is use for the Hbb Box (Catch up TV) at the other end of the house.

Now when the NBN comes (FTTN) to our Area How do you connect all the above (THE SAME) to a new Supplied by the Provider NBN Modem router or if you buy an approved modem router

They should all connect the same way, the only thing different will be the VDSL modem.

So the new supplied modem router has the 4 Ethernet ports behind it.

Yes. Mine is a Hauwei...it is one of these.......it doesn't have 5G however (it SHOULD in this day and age), so its hooked by cable to a 5G router.

The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.
