A 34-year-old man and the 14-year-old bride he illegally married have both cried in a Melbourne court as he pleaded guilty to his crime.

Mohammad Shakir pleaded guilty to going through a formal ceremony of marriage with a person not of marriageable age at Noble Park last September.

The "wedding" was conducted by former imam, Ibrahim Omerdic.

As part of Shakir's plea, two charges were withdrawn by prosecutors in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

They included allegations Shakir had sex with the girl between September 30 and October 1, 2016, following their wedding.




I don't see any reason for a plea deal.... prosecutors had conclusive evidence he was guilty.

The child sex offence could have scored him life.

What ever sentence he eventually gets, should include deportation at the end of it... same for the scumbag that 'married' them.

I'd really like to know is what part the parents of the 'bride' played in what could only be construed as supplying a minor for gain/sexual gratification (I'm 'kin sure $$ would have changed hands via a dowry)

And another point is that given the original charges are now dropped and he was only found guilty of "going through a formal ceremony of marriage with a person not of marriageable age", its unlikely that he will even go on the sex offenders register.

Only in Australia.....have sex with a 14 yo girl when you are 34 and don't face any child sex charges because you are a muslim.

I would like to hope that the prosecution would have appealed, but it looks like they have all been neutered! I Hope, that, should she fall pregnant, before her "legal" birthday, then he should be charged, yet again. It would be politically expedient to call for an enquiry into the decision by a sitting MP, of any persuasion.

VICTORIAN taxpayers will foot the bill for part of the legal defence of a disgraced imam who conducted a wedding ceremony marrying a child bride to a man 20 years her senior.

Magistrate Philip Goldberg told Ibrahim Omerdic today jail was the only option for such serious offending that endangered the 14-year-old.

But he effectively cut him loose, jailing him for two months on a $2500 recognizance order.

It means as long as he’s of good behaviour for two years, Omerdic will never step foot inside a jail cell.

Omerdic was charged with a forced marriage crime, but the charge was later swapped for a charge of solemnising an illegal marriage.

Today he won a costs order against Victoria Police, forcing them to pay for his prosecution of the dropped forced marriage charge.

Omerdic married the child bride to a man more than 20 years her senior in an undercover ceremony recorded by the groom.

Piss-poor Vic Police for reducing the charge and the pathetic magistrate for letting this scum walk... and awarding costs.

The coppers probably had trouble finding any "witnesses" to make the original charge stick. They probably went for the lesser charge in the hope that he would do some time. The magistrate, of course, then is responsible for applying the law to the charges presented. The problem here is the sentencing rules. It could well be that legislation only specifies the MAXIMUM sentence whereas it's about time that MINIMUM sentences are specified.
