You run the risk of having your port locked by NBN if you use non-approved 3rd party equipment.
Use the modem supplied by your RSP.
So this is realistically still the only option ??
What do you with things like security cameras for example where you have port forwarding settings etc ? The thought of going back to some sort of dumbed down Telstra modem that allows nothing but the basics is a bit frightening, but I suppose it might be worth it while I sort out what my best option is.
You can Port Forward with the Telstra supplied modem.
There's a dns section in there but it doesn't seem to work.
here is a list of devices that work with the ftn and wont lock the port
dont say linux if i wanted it id install it
Thats where my allergy to service provider modems comes in They tend to grey out features they don't want you to have, plus of course they control the firmware and can remove anything they want at anytime.
I currently have a TP Link Archer D7, I think* I might be able to connect it to the Telstra modem and use it in router mode and perhaps retain features. Has anyone done this with their existing third party modem/router ? Or am I dreaming ? (its been a long time since I ever used something in router mode)
I ended up buying an ASUS AC68U which works well and have no trouble with it.
Have upgraded the firmware a couple of times and haven't had a problem.
If there are all these modems out there, is it a scare tactic by the ISP for you to buy from them because they have a vested interest or kick backs from their suppliers?
Yes it may end up locking your port but so can an ISP supplied modem. Yes I understand that with a ISP supplied modem it will be easier to sort, but it still seems to be a load of crap.
just my opinion
