My Daughters Bird fell sick so we rang one off the ONLY 2 Bird vets in Brisbane and booked for a appointment and we told them over the phone our findings (Butt Swelled and a lethargic and not being herself) so when the daughter went there they come out with all the Bullshit (mind you we have two of these birds both Female and we compared both BUTTS and found my daughter bird has a Swollen Butt) so they recommended keeping the Bird over the night for Blood test and Xrays and all the other test in the World.
Now Next morning after Giving the Bird some medicine she was 50% better and we ask for the Bill so we can take her home and then the SHOCK OF THE BILL. The Receptionist said $960 FU#@$%^%@@$K !! Dollars.
$960 they came with all the Bullshit so after the Bird came home the Bird still was not being herself so later that Night (Bird resting in my Daughter Room) she Cooooooooo--d and laid a BIG EGG and after that she was right as rain.
Hang on they were told that the butt was swollen compared to the Other female Bird we have, Plus they said they did an Xray.
Surely the Christ they would have expected the Bird was trying to lay a egg for F,,, Sake. They should have known upon examine the bird that the bird was to laying a Egg. The Bill!!! WTF Are you kidding. Never Again!!
That Night My Daughter found a Good site for studying bird vet matters.

how much is a bullet these days
There is a fine line between "Hobby" and "Madness"
Yes this Bird is a Total Friend of my Daughter She the Bird thinks My Daughter is Her Male Partner. The Facebook is hot with this matter and someone said if you cannot pay the bill we will have to put the Bird down. I cannot believe that they are so COLD and Callas all for $$$$ Money $$$$.
Only Last Month (Jan the 09) I lost My Cockatoo that I have had for 45 Years. We Cried All day. This Bird FRED live inside the house with me from the day I found her (Yes a Female) after a Storm as a Baby.
I respect Animal, It a pity I cannot do the same with some Humans.
that's quite a funny story.

If I had a bird like that, not even my daughters love and googly eyes would prevent it "ooops...running away"....
or flying in this case.
The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.
I would contact them for a complete refund due to incompetence. Then point out that otherwise you will issue a Formal complaint to the governing body requesting they be disqualified .

$960.00??? It does sound a bit egg-sessive to me....
How can it be possible that they did not diagnose that the bird had a big fat egg in her that she layed only hours after she got home from the VET. She has layed Eggs Before but this time because she has a Lovely big New cage the size that a person can fit into she possible found is not like the Old cage and and possible she won't lay the egg. She layed the egg in the small Sickness cage.
Again the incompetence of the Vet for not knowing that she had a egg in her after we told them that the bird history of laying not fertilizes eggs
We have a Male Parrot the same Breed but the problem the Male spending more time (About 3 time a day, day in and day out) HUMPING THE 6 inch BALL on a stainless steel chain yet he has two juicy female in they cage next to him. Yes we mix them. One Female bird like Him (the other Female) and when she is with Him she lowers her landing gear.
My wife has received a few comments from people with the same story that their bills has also been a shade short of a $1000. Hummmmm
(35 min to type this, not good this morning, Horrible the Stroke can do to someone)

Going on these remarks, those fees I have heard being charged on those US Veterinary programs are not that outlandish as I thought like '$5000 for a Dog to have a broken leg fixed or $unspecified to have it put down instead'.
Sometimes on that UK show 'Supervet' you will hear what he can charge or what has been quoted to the animals owner by another Veterinary service.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!
Those specialist bird vets are hard to find, I think there's only one here in the Newcastle area.
My daughter takes her bird to him and each time she comes out she's between $500 ~ $1000 poorer.
I think because there's not many of them around they can charge pretty much what they like.
Sounds like it's not just the female bird that got screwed...
True freedom is the greatest gift a man can possess, yet is the one thing most easily and innocently given away, to crafty curses and binds cleverly disguised as blessings and gifts, in the pursuit of supposed achievement, status and power.

Our $12 budgie had a problem with mites so a trip to a avian vet sorted out the problem for $45. Still kicking along at 8 yo

That a decent avian vet. This mob they would change you $1000.
At the same time my daughter was at the Vet they were a budgie there for a day or two and apparently the woman that own it she was sitting at the customers section crying but what I cant understand (being sarcastic) the Bird is still ok to fair condition so why is her crying? Arrrgggh now I know!, she got the Bill.
I had a dream last night that I met a millionaire that I save his wife from drowning (that will do, some will say let her drown) and he ask me how can I repay you?. I would say Open a Vet service in every capital city in Australia and only charge a max of $40 + the cheapest for Medicine. I would also ask to advertise this service on every outlet of Advertisement we have in Australia
I dont know if this will fix mites on all birds but when I had chooks, the Rooster had some sort of mite build nests over his eyes using the flakes of his skin.
The cure was cheap and simple and it was to coat the area with cooking oil like canola or sunflower.
These 'nests' of mites were also on his legs and in less than 72 hours after covering with the cooking oil, they were all gone.
The principle being that the oil coated the mites and smothered them.
Another cheap treatment was to buy that Derris Dust for Roses and spread that about.
The Rose Derris dust has the same chemicals as the one recommended for Poultry but it was less than a 1/5th the price, like $3 for Rose dust compared to $15 for the other.

Like anything, you pay for specialist treatment. You went to an Avian Vet, you could have gone to your local general vet.
A blood test for a bird is more than $200 on its own from memory, we don't run a public health system for birds subsidised by the taxpayer like we do for people.
I would think if you have had birds for that long and had a bird that has layed before, an egg would have been something that you would have thought of.
Post up the bill or individual costs. Thats the only way people can deduce whether its a fair bill or not, based on "and all the other test in the World" we have no idea what you have actually been charged for. Rants and raves on Austech from people that post no proof or source are becoming an everyday occurance these days. If you had all the tests in the world, it would seem you got off cheaply then wouldnt it ?
We don't have to put the Bill Here for you and other to say if it excessive or not because you and other are not Experts in this field but I can tell you this that we have Contacted some of the Breeders in Australia (That the Wife Knows) also in and USA that specialize in these birds (Wife and Daughter Always talk to them Via FaceBook)and they got the Copy of the Bill and they said it was Excessive and some test was not needed and consider we told that the Birds layed eggs before they should have checked this symptom first but did Nothing like this.
All the Test Found NO EGG period. Yes The Bill is Beautiful to look at, it VERY VERY VERY profession with Plenty Of colors It Looks that Good that we should Frame it as it VERY VERY GOOD to look at but NOT as my GOOD Friend that Died Not Long ago and What Happen to Him was Disgusting and after This I called it people like this as "BOB SERVICE" I will Explain This Later when the wife and Daughter can Type it.
Yes This Bill have Plenty of Lines to Add up the Cost probable written by a Lawyer but at the End of the day they did not find that the cause of the Bird being SICK and all she was trying to do is laying a Egg and this was the reason she was not well.
