wow 20yrs...it's funny I would of been here sooner but I had a boss that knew all about goldies and didn't want to tell me and I didn't bother googling (it wasn't google back then either! This is was astavista or something like that) lol. It was only when I moved to the country and had very poor tv reception and decided to give select TV a crack.....the rest is history!

Wow. I'd forgotten about the cdcopyworld bit. 99% sure I joined when it was called that. Was what i was doing back then.
Also voted for 20. 21 is only for that one birthday.
As for how to celebrate, maybe a Montage of the oldest post headings, or prizes for people who were here when it was cdcopyworld? Or a raffle prize eligible for members with more than 100 posts? Really don't know.

mtv, off topic, I left an admin forum message, just wanted to let you know in case you didnt see it.

I have no idea what month it was of 1997, so we will have to choose one Unless anyone has a 20 year old screen shot
Maybe tee it up with your birthday if it hasn't already happened?

But congrats for starting it and running it for so long. A lesser forum wouldn't have survived a data crash and recover as quickly as this one has done so it's a testament to the quality of our membership

20 years works better for a forum, 21 better suits a person than a forum

Think you should celebrate at 20. Also agree as above that 21 is a human celebration type thing.

Not when the work experience kid at Leaseweb throws half your raid array in the rubbish bin.

Edit: I can now only view forum threads when logged in. Is this some random behavior from my side(because I don't use M$, IE/Chrome, whatever) or a decision to keep the party private?
The last one....just for a short period of time.

PZ might be on to something in regards to using my birthday.....I am 50 in July.

I should have kept all the threats to sue me over the last 20 years and posted them up. I wish I had of recorded one conversation I had with a lawyer, I was that ####ed off with the content and threats in one letter that I rang the lawyer in question up and absolutely let rip. He was gobsmacked, I could near hear his jaw hit the ground

I should have kept all the death threats and threats of violence. The worst being a threat to kill me and family and blow my house up.
I think most sane people would have pulled up stumps at that, but stupidly I persisted and we are still here.

If I may ask, why on earth such harsh reactions from people regarding the forums?
True freedom is the greatest gift a man can possess, yet is the one thing most easily and innocently given away, to crafty curses and binds cleverly disguised as blessings and gifts, in the pursuit of supposed achievement, status and power.

In the early 2000's, Pay TV piracy was big in Australia. There was LOTS of discussion on Austech about it. Providers used to change the Country Code every couple of weeks which would mean card stopped working, when the new Country Code was posted up by someone our server would nearly melt from the traffic.

Australian providers didnt want people to know their services could be pirated, so used to threaten to sue me regularly. Third party satellite receiver/accessories business all wanted to advertise here (new aftermarket receivers were not affected by Country Code changes), I made a decision to make an agreement with one single business which pissed plenty of the others off. Some decided to cause me as much grief as possible.

And then there are just the loose cannons of the world. In the early days, the internet was like the lawless wild west of the 1800's in the US. There was nowhere to report a stalking loony and the police didn't care. You were on your own to deal with it. But it turned a full circle when a member here decided to stalk the stalker and give him a taste of his own medicine. He didnt like it one bit and was never heard of again.

I remember the crash as having something to do with either the memory or the server failing and everything before was lost and the decision was made to restart again.
Because I dont trust my own memory on doing things I am unfamiliar with I had printed out some information on repairing the power supply on the Humax etc and 'filed' it away.
This is dated 18.1.05, 3 years before the 'Crash'.

Another is a copy of the letter from Austar advising of the new SMART cards soon to be issued with the Sponge Bob logo dated 11/20/03 (bloody Yank Date) which the customer had to change over themselves !!!
But under that is a 2 page 'Information Bulletin' issued by Videosat located at Hornsby NSW reading 'Australia Direct to Home Free to Air Digital Satellite TV and Radio' and its dated August 2001......
How things have changed since then, eh??

My guess is I was a reader or even a member from sometime in 2003 as it took me sometime before I was able to buy the Humax ($500, down from around $1300 ?) from that shop near Concord but like most around that time I was 'into' burning CD's so I may have been here before that.
