Default How do you transfer a recording from Tape recorder to Computer

Yes as the title say how do you transfer a recording (my Cockatoo talking before she died) from one of those small hand recorders to an Computer for permanent keeping. This Sony battery powered recorder use a Chip and not a Tape to store the recording and also has two plugs up the top. RED Looks like a Microphone symbol and GREEN looks like a Head Ear set Symbol.

Most computers have a line in socket. If you have Windows, just get a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable and use the free "Audacity" application to record the audio. . It'll give you a wave file. Can then use foobar2000 (or whatever) to convert to mp3 if you want.

There may be easier ways, but that's how I converted some last century tape recordings to digital format.

Pink is microphone or line input on my mobo & front panel.

Only thing you may need to work out is if your inputs are mono or stereo?

    Pink is Mic input.

    Blue is stereo line input.

    Green is speakers/headphones/line output.

Some computers (like Tiny's) don't have a separate line in socket and share the mic socket, with switching by soundcard/audio control panel selector software setting.

Eg: software select either mic or line level input.

If they are just AAA batteries I don't think you'll lose the recording just by changing the batteries.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

The tape recorder I have I would say it would Be MONO so if it is MONO how does that effect recording it "eg" Left and Right channel on the computer program both recorded in Mono.

Firstly, it's not a 'tape' recorder, if it doesn't use tape.

I'm assuming it's actually a Digital Voice Recorder.

    Most of them are stereo.

If it is only mono, there are two possibilities.

    1. It may output to 2 channel mono via a stereo connector.

    2. It may output mono only, usually as left channel only if using a 3 connector stereo plug.

    If 1. Use a stereo 3 pin to 3 pin 3.5mm cable.

If 2. Use a stereo 3.5mm cable and record on one channel mono or the software will allow you to record one channel input to two channels, or convert it to 'stereo' (actually, two channel mono) later. This is the same as recording a microphone on both channels.

Also, if it's a mono output, you can use a mono plug to stereo plug cable, or a stereo plug with the L & R pins joined.

I highly expect the output of you device to be stereo.

The manual should say what the output is.

What's the model of the recorder?

Oh... and no, removing the batteries won't affect the recording.

Thank you for you good information.
Yes my head sometimes revert to old tec like tape recorder instead of digital recorder because the digital bit is stuck in my head and would not come out.
I would like for ever one to have a stroke just for ONE day only one day just to see how twisted you come. Most people they would nic themself.
    Once again Thank you.

    It's a Sony ICD-BX700

Many of these Digital Voice Recorders have a USB connection, so you can just transfer the mp3 audio files directly to computer, but this model doesn't have that ability.

You will need to use the headphone output connected to the computer audio input as previously mentioned.

The recorder is stereo (but can record mono or stereo), so you will need a stereo cable 3.5mm plug for the computer sound card to whatever size jack is used on the recorder headphone socket.

The manual doesn't specify the size of the headphone jack, only calling it a 'mini jack' so it may be 2.5mm stereo or 3.5mm stereo.

    Hope this helps.

I understand your frustration with the stroke. My sister suffers the same. I can empathise as, after my accident, I was in a similar position. Sister had the stroke at about the same time as my head injury and it was amazing how similar our problems were. The only real difference is that I seem to have healed, whereas she has not.
