Wink Newbie: re-purposing old 2-way internet dish to receive NHK World TV

    G'day,

We have an old 2-way dish (it's huge and approximately egg-shaped) that was left-over after yet-another satellite internet upgrade.

I would like to re-use this dish to receive free-to-air NHK World (from Japan), which from reading their site: is available on Intelsat 19 to the pacific area:

    Satellite: IS-19
    Frequency: 4060MHz
    Symbol Rate: 26590 baud
    FEC Value: 1/2
    Polarization: H

I would like to know if this dish is suitable for this task, before I use it as a roof for a chook pen or suchlike.
I use MythTV to record and watch terrestrial TV, and I guess I can buy a DVB-S2 card to receive the satellite signal in the same manner as the DVB-T signal.

From my reading here and elsewhere, it seems I need to purchase an "LNB"(?)
If someone could tell me which LNB I would need that would be very helpful.
I notice some have dual-ports, is this useful at all?

    many thanks,
    -BigMsMuffet

Unfortunately, no, the dish isn't suitable.

    It's a Ku-Band dish and 4060MHz is C-Band.

As the info in the link you provided says, you require a:
"Satellite Dish with a diameter of 2.5 to 6m *Metal Mesh Type or Resin Solid Type"

Yes, you would also need to replace the LNB with a C-Band type and possibly modify the support arm for both the diameter of the LNB feedhorn and also the focal distance from the surface of the dish, but as I said, the existing dish isn't suitable to begin with.

Mmm...seems like you might just be out of luck, especially size wise. Then the further complications as mtv has stated.

Very nice channel, I remember it, but seems impossible to get on Ku-band now (free at least) unless you're living on mainland Asia or in Japan itself.

Could've sworn they had more globally distributed Ku-band feeds in the past though.

The following table lists your NHK options:

Without a C-band setup you're pretty well knackered.

They used to be FTA on Optus D2, but slunk off into the Foxtel fold in 2013.

    Hmm, satbeams.com says I need a 2.3m dish for Intelsat 19.
There's a few of these floating around cheaply on gumtree, but then I'm going to need a positioning-tuner etc.
I guess when you price that against a foxtel subscription it's still pretty cheap.

    thanks for the help guys.

Yep... but you don't get the same programs as you get on Foxtel.

(I don't have Foxtel... just not worth it for me)

English language NHK World is broadcasting HD C-Band on AsiaSat 7, 105.5°E, and Intelsat 19 at 166.0°E, The Asiasat 7 signal seems stronger in the southeast its well received on 1.8m mesh dish.

Japanese language NHK Prime is a pay channel on 166.0°E Ku and C-Band

Yeah, you're right, I also kinda noticed that. Even on IS-20 at 68.5 °E pretty good C-band levels, issue would be the elevation if one is too far east in Oz of course.

But, before converting your dish into something else like you mentioned, you can't do a swap-out with someone looking for a relatively large Ku-dish for some reason, who might have the C-band setup you're looking for?

Might be worth your while still in that sense to find out perhaps.

Cband on a KU dish was a rage a few years back. And NHK using Fec 1/2 won't need much to load it. I would say if the dish is 1.2M or larger you have a chance
