A regional passenger plane has made an emergency landing at Sydney Airport after a propeller apparently fell off during approach.
The Regional Express flight from Albury to Sydney - carrying 16 passengers and three crew - made a distress call about midday on Friday when it was 20 kilometres from the airport.
The Saab 340 subsequently landed safely.
In the pan-pan call, the crew said the propeller assembly had "dislodged", Civil Aviation Safety Authority spokesman Peter Gibson told AAP, while photographs of the plane on the ground showed the right propeller missing altogether.
Mr Gibson said during his 20 years in the aviation industry he'd never heard of a propeller falling off a plane.
"I've never come across it ... it's very unusual," he said.

prop shaft past it's use by date?
Cheers, Tiny

Likely suspect #1.
Some reports are suggesting it detached over Sydney's north because that was the landing direction, but it was actually around 10nautical miles south of Sydney somewhere in the vicinity around Camden.
No reports of damage caused on the ground at this stage.
Sweet... that's goin straight to the pool room......
So lucky for it to spin off away from the fuselage otherwise it would have been a very different outcome.

Glad I wasn't on it
+1 for good to see the prop didn't spin into the fuselage.
It has happened before , cant remember when but i think it was also a SAAB from memory. anyways lucky no injuries and hopefully the shaft can be found and analysed for cause.
I would have been more worried if it was just one blade that came off rather than the whole prop.
Could you imagine the huge imbalance created by 1 prop missing....probably would have dislodged the whole engine or cracked the wing.
Im wondering if it was a slight balance issue causing fatigue which led to the failure.

I have to work this week near where it was lost.
I can imagine working at this site and seeing a propeller falling from the sky. It was overcast so I probably wouldn't have seen the plane.
"Hmmmm..... I'm guessing there should be more to that."
Yes I am an agent of Satan, but my duties are largely ceremonial.
The propeller which fell off a Regional Express flight as it was approaching Sydney has been found in bushland southwest of the city.
A police helicopter on patrol spotted the Saab 340 propeller in bushland off The River Road at Revesby about midday today.
Looking at the pic, the prop is intact..... but a long way from near Camden where it was initially said to have detached.
The River Road, Revesby.... heavily populated area... pure luck it fell in bushland and not on nearby shopping centres, homes or roads.

Ha, Revesby. Shit, that's a good autogyro from Camden. Amazing it didn't hit something more substantial than the ground

another few metres and it would have fallen into the Georges River.
Audio from ATC of the incident.
Check this out at around the 20sec mark..

Tell Mr Peter Gibson of CASA to get a FOXTEL subscription and watch 'Seconds from Disaster' and the other show about aircraft mishaps to see twin engine aircraft loose a propeller, some regrettably with FATAL results !!!
Seeing until the introduction of the Jet Engine after WW2, ALL Aircraft starting with the Wrights Bros first powered flight used propellers, it seems very possible during that time, more than a few have lost a propeller for various reasons in flight.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!
Polair3 winched the propeller out of the bushland to a nearby sportsground for ATSB to inspect, before being transported away on a truck for further analysis.

Seems interesting that they walked in to connect the prop to the helicopter sling
Wonder why they just didn't walk the prop out?
Are they a bit heavy?

Not a good week for REX.
Another of their fleet of Saab 340 planes has made an emergency landing at Dubbo following an engine failure.
A Rex Airlines flight has made an emergency landing at Dubbo Airport, the carrier's second mid-air incident in a week, with a passenger reporting flames coming from the flight 821's engine.
The pilot was forced to shut the engine down after a warning light came on about 10:10am.
All 26 passengers and crew landed safely and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has begun an investigation.
The flight was headed from Dubbo to Sydney.
