Default Up with the times LOL

Just received a email from telstra that nbn will be available shortly, ive been with them on adsl+2 for a few years now, and from what ive read there will be no additional costs for the change over and also send equipment at no extra costs, seems pretty good to me, so connecting to nbn, what sort of difference would I be looking at over adsl+2??

If you will be connected to a FTTN service, it really depends on what distance you are from the node cabinet and also the quality of the copper connection from the node to and within your premises. Obviously, the type of plan you sign up for will also be relevant.

Read the very informative thread in the Australian Internet and NBN section of the forum for more information.

Use the NBN address checker to see what connection type you'll get.

As tristen said, there's a lot of variables with FTTN.

Also, depending on how your existing phone/data cabling is set up in your home can also make a big difference in speed.

Eg: your phone lead in will need to be isolated so the first connection becomes the NBN network termination /modem. You can't leave any cabling or devices in parallel as most homes do prior to connecting to the NBN.

The difference you can expect?... it's a lucky dip, depending on the NBN variables mentioned.

Some unfortunate people have had lower performance that what they previously had on ADSL2+, but most have had at least equal performance.

The biggest improvement is usually a significant upload speed increase.

I wouldn't recommend jumping into the fastest speed (and most expensive) plan, at least not at first, as a lot of subscribers paying for 100/40 are only typically getting around 25mb/s download.

The wording says 'up to' so even though you pay for the highest speed, there's no guarantee that's what you'll get, especially with copper limitations.

    Planned availability: Jun 2017*.

Planned technology: nbn™ Fibre to the node (FTTN)*
My current cabling runs from a power pole that is a twin old type black wire that has 2 copper wires, that runs to a small junction box under the eave, then a single cable back to the house with a single old type plug

Bugger... that aerial twin cable is the worst type for data.

What speeds are you currently getting with ADSL2+?

Whoa... not much better than dial up, Rick.

Are you a long way away from your exchange?

Those figures are a real concern, as they may indicate how poor the street cabling is.

How far away from the NBN green FTTN cabinet are you?

Keeping in mind, it's not always the one that's physically closer that you may end up being connected through.

Do you have many devices on the line... phones, answering machine, caller ID device?

Do you have a central ADSL filter/splitter, or just the in-line filters?

If in-line filters, do you have one on each device?
