You haven't lived in northern Australia if you haven't been in one... I've sat through 4 I think now, worst was a Cat 4 (just) that crossed just south of this one back in 2009 or so I think it was... It wasn't too bad - until your roof starts to creak and sounds like starting to flap. It's at that point you go "Oh F!@#! I probably should have left town..." But really, the worst part was the next few days - it was hot and humid as hell, eerily still and there was no power or phones (and most of the roads are blocked from trees!)
A Cat 3, went directly over us in WA and that was super eery! S*&^ and corruption for 5 or 6 hours then still clear skies for about 15 minutes.
WA seemed to have much better infrastructure and alerting than QLD did - and the whole process seems to run smoother. The warnings system was clearer and I'm pretty sure there was more legal stance when it came to emergency services and access. For example, you could be fined if you were being an idiot and outdoors during the code RED stage (nor did emergency services have to respond) and employers / schools etc had no say in when was close time. Code ORANGE was get home or out of the area ASAP. Code BLUE was the bolt to the bottle'o to stock up for the next couple of weeks as most roads would be cut off...
its an annual threat so all you can do is be prepared. It didnt turn us off moving up this way its still beautiful and quiet the other 364 days of the year

Starting to look like the Islands really copped it.
Less building material to fly around, but they sure got the winds and swell.

At least, with a cyclone you know what to expect, and when to expect it, within reason, of course. We used to laugh at people (southerners) who would ask us, "how do you go, living in Darwin with all those cyclones, and stuff?", Our response was usually along the lines of "I don't know, how do you go living in (insert name here) with all those bushfires and floods?". I know what I'd prefer. We had close friends who lived though Tracy and then Yahzee and their comment was Yahzee was far better in that they hardly lost outside communication and information was far more up to date and relevant.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
Yes, i find the 2 natural disasters and interesting comparison
(Bushfires v Cyclones)
Both you get some degree of warning
Bushfires being you don't get as much warning
Yet, with a Bushfire, you either burn down or you don't, it is rather black and white.
You can burn and the house next door is untouched.
Where as a cyclone seems to effect everyone in the area with tree damage, water damage, flooding, etc
Everyone feels he force of a cyclone, there is no hiding from it in a sense.
If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!
It amazes me that while authorities bust their arses to try and keep people indoors and out of harms way, we have channels 7 and 9 trying to out do each other with A. the amount of reporters out in it and B. how much danger they can put reporters in.
I turned off......5 hours of interviewing local hobos before hand was enough to consider ending it all. I did hope a tree would fall on Stefanovich but alas we were out of luck
Boom Tish.... Comment of the thread P.Z.
Here is a bit from Hamilton Island
I haven't seen or heard a single thing from Hayman Island yet, it was even closer

Part from the massive rains coming down the Queensland coast and into NSW, which was also expected
Check out this new possible Cyclone developing out off Cairns
Data is from Weather modelling.

True freedom is the greatest gift a man can possess, yet is the one thing most easily and innocently given away, to crafty curses and binds cleverly disguised as blessings and gifts, in the pursuit of supposed achievement, status and power.
