need to circulate the oil and cool it down otherwise wont
take long to get to hot.
who's seen the videos?
who's done it already
my daring caring carer & i are about to attempt the old oil filled computer
risking life & limb & who has to throw the switch
ingredients:
1 $30 acrylic fish tank, ebay special
1 super duper am2 mobo & some cpu - yes it still works
1 yum chum power supply? no switch
1 hard drive (apparently you can put it in the drink but only ssd's )
2 x 5 litre of cheapo vegy oil (baby oils too dear) any suggestions here?
2 x old circuit breaker power boards & a 20 metre extension lead - safety 1st
will it work? lay your bets

yea boredom, mate wants to make it like a fake fish tank for da man cave
cool the oil, will a couple of fans in there circulate the oil? heatsink- maybe no need? cant see how cpu fan helps

I'd chuck in a couple of powder extinguishers, 000 pre dialled, and a few beers for good measure
Couple of points I'd look into further would be the electrical conductivity of Vegetable Oil - particularly the one you are using. It should be ok, but but some of the cheaper ones might contain other products which change the change it. And not to mention the smell... Cold vegetable oil makes me gag, where as good old engine oil would definitely make the man cave manly
I would not think circulation of the oil is a concern - oil naturally has a good heat conductivity and should be viscous enough to allow natural circulation - I could be wrong, but at least you can monitor the CPU temp and add a slow moving fan or something to improve circulation.

It's one thing to propose using oil, which is not readily combustible, but to suggest the use of highly volatile petrol is irresponsible to say the least.
There's nothing personal here and I realise that it was probably meant in jest, but it's irresponsible non-the-less, particularly if children or somebody of low intellect read the post and took it seriously.

No, of course, point taken. But my sarcasm was directed at what a crazy idea it is to run electrical components in oil in the first place.
Considering some components can run at 80°C in cases, and that being near the flashpoint of several oily compounds, I guess it's safe to say a fire is inevitable.

Vegetable oil will go rancid (oxidisation and bacterial). It will eventually start to stink and go milky.
Mineral oil is recommended. There are special clear mineral oils available for this project.
I wouldn't waste an SSD for this. Just keep a standard hard drive above the oil hidden in the lid of the aquarium where you have the lights. Use colour LEDs instead of the flouro and have plenty of LEDs submersed too.
What you save from not using an SSD you can invest in the right oil and nice light effects.
In a pet store I saw flouro coloured fake jelly fish that could look cool when they sway around with the fan motion of the oil.
Like all electrical appliances I would not run it unattended.

+1 for mineral oil.... the same type used in dummy loads and transformers to dissipate heat.
You'll also need a lot more than 10 litres, as that will only fill a 30 litre tank 1/3rd, which will look like the rest has leaked out.
Speaking from experience, here, are we, tristen?
Whilst it sounds like an interesting project, I would still ask the question, "Why Bother?" Are you planning on overclocking?
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

yes you are all correct, the dream is over
mineral oil is the go but the cost of it alone out weighs the concept?
veggy oil is cheaper but again, it has its own dramas
paraffin oil? still costly, need tristens advanced science knowledge of which is not dangerous? meaning conductive
apparently paraffin oil is kero? wow dont want to spill it on the carpet
it is doable though

I used to work on an aircraft radar that used an oil filled transmitter modulator. This was a flooded system, and there was no circulatory system, apart from thermal currents of course. The oil was filled via a vacuum evacuated fill station that literally sucked all the air bubbles out of the oil, before it was pumped into the modulator. The oil was mainly for insulative purposes. I'm "fairly" certain it was military type OM-11, which is a clear mineral oil. I don't know what the civvy equiv is though sorry.
