    Default Ku LNB help

    Hi Guys,

I'm a Ham Radio operator and I'm trying to find a single-feedhorn Ku band LNB with two independent IF-out connections - one for Horizontal-linear and one for Vertical-linear. (edit: with 9.75GHz LO)

Does such a thing exist? I spent all afternoon googling but I can't nail it down.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

Any particular reason why the LO needs to be 9.75MHz?

You didn't mention if you need prime-focus or offset feedhorn.

More info on what you are trying to achieve may help with suggestions.

Something like a quad/quatro LNBF with 4 independent outputs may be suitable.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

It needs to be an offset feedhorn to suit cheapie 400-600mm dish. I need to convert the 10360MHz ham-radio band down to 610MHz. The high-band LO won't work - it's too far away. I know 10360 is "out of band", but I have it on good advice that the gain is not horrendously down at that point.

I see what you mean with the Quattro LNB. How do I configure that LNB? Does it have a default configuration, or does it sit there and look blankly at you until some magic incantation is uttered to it?

edit: This video explains it perfectly!

edit: all over aliexpress for cheap as chips

    Thanks for your help.

    Steve,

The quatro (as you've discovered from the youtube vid) has separate outputs.

For your purpose, you only need to use the L/V and L/H.

Typically, universal LNB's are switched between the lo and hi LO's using a 22kHz tone, but with the quatro type, the LO's are separated and don't require the switching tone.

Let's know how you get on with your project and welcome to Austech btw.

    Thanks so much!

I did figure that I could just ask in a place like this and all would become clear, but it is my personal rule to spend four hours googling it first! Maybe too harsh?

Yeah the 10GHz ham radio band is a tough nut to crack, and a cheapie Ku LNB is the easy way out..

    Righto, as you were!

Steve, it's very pleasing to see a new member making an effort to help themselves by searching first, not just begging for software, which is an all-too common occurrence here.

Sometimes it's just a matter of knowing exactly what to search for (description/terminology) that can make all the difference with results.

Do they still make those DiSEqC LNB's you used to get a few years ago that had this configuration? Dual output one H and the other V.

A normal cheapie universal twin LNB might just very well do the job. Most anyway operate at 9750 first and then need a 22kHz tone or basic/simple DiSEqC command to tell them to switch to 10600/10700. So, no tone/command - LO stays at 9750MHz.

For polarity, you just power the two outputs with different voltages down the cable - 13V for vertical and 18V for horizontal. That's the beauty of that twin LNB, outputs are independent and can operate on different polarities at the same time.

True freedom is the greatest gift a man can possess, yet is the one thing most easily and innocently given away, to crafty curses and binds cleverly disguised as blessings and gifts, in the pursuit of supposed achievement, status and power.

well thanks for starting the thread Steve, I just learnt a heap about Ham radio that I didn't even know I needed to know.
    Cheers, Tiny
