Default Satellite install - is this OK

    Hi guys,

In short - I'm looking at purchasing the following:

I have an active Foxtel subscription at home and rather than paying for additional setup costs, would like to purchase an additional box and plug it in to our rental after installing this satellite with the necessary cabling.

Apologies if this should not be posted on here.

    Thanks

You say 'installing'.... the dish shown is a portable type and typically, quite flimsy, pressed metal.

I've seen them ward/distort, so if you are thinking of 'installing' a dish, then I wouldn't recommend that type, but rather a more solidly-constructed dish.

You will also need a dual LNB and cabling to suit.

You can't 'purchase' a Foxtel decoder, but you can add additional boxes to your rental contract, which is what I take your intention to mean.

Yes, it will work at other locations, but will only receive channels the same as what you have at your home location.

Yes, it's against Foxtel's terms and conditions, but many subscribers do it.

    Thanks mtv

I was expecting you to reply. You were a great help a few years back when I was interested in this stuff, then the passion fell away. So I'm now back!

Thanks for your opinion - I will need to try source a better quality dish with dual LNB, I'm assuming this is for the IQ watch and record functionality ?

You are correct though, it will be an additional purchase on my side for another decoder under my already existing contract

I enjoy the installing side and those types of things, so I'd prefer to do it myself anyway just need to find the right dish. Is there a for sale section here ?

Yes, there's the Buy Sell & Trade section, but new Ku dishes are relatively cheap and any of the satellite stores have them.

I personally like the Azure Shine dishes as they have a rolled edge and are very strong.

You will also need an appropriate mount... metal or tiled roof, etc.

iQ requires two inputs, yes, partly to record/watch, but even without recording as one input is for horizontal signals and the other for vertical signals and they won't work without both connected.

    Thank you again

I'll take a look around eBay and Gumtree and try my luck. Do you know approx how much a whole 'kit' would cost.

    We have a tiled roof

Cost depends on dish type/size, length of cables, etc.

I personally go for a larger dish than the standard 65cm Foxtel dish... usually around 85cm.

Dish size depends on your location... some areas require larger dishes.

Ballpark figure for equipment would likely be $200-$250

    Thank you

The neighbor at the rental got a standard install from Foxtel, dish looks to be on the smaller size, I guess going larger gives you better stability ?

Any recommendation on where to purchase say, a whole kit ?

Standard Foxtel dishes are built to a price... they are the bare minimum required. If they fail, they get replaced.

The larger the dish, the more reliable and resistant they are to 'rain fade' of the signal, as they capture more signal than smaller dishes.

You haven't mentioned where you are... someone local to you may be able to recommend suppliers.

There are several that will also freight to you... at extra cost of course.

It'll work.... can't vouch for quality of the dish and LNB though, but from the pic, the dish looks like it has a rolled edge, which is good for strength.

Also, the included mount is for a metal roof.

Some years ago I set up a dish using the standard tin roof mount nailed to a couple of bits of wood so it sat on a concrete path.
The main problem with this was that the damned thing moved every time the slightest breeze came up and here in the Mountains, I had to reset it nearly every other day.
Since then I have made sure that besides the mast being 'Plumb', its securely mounted so only a raging gale will cause any movement in the dish.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Another question I did have was - if the Foxtel subscription was via Telstra Cable and not satellite, does that impact the use of the second box at the second household ?

If it's a 'cable' subscription, Foxtel will only supply additional 'cable' boxes for the account address.

Eg: You can't get Foxtel satellite decoders if your Foxtel service is via cable.

    No different to what?

The iQ3 decoder is available for both cable and satellite, plus it has a terrestrial tuner.

Yep... same as iQ2, plus a terrestrial antenna input.
