Wow hope it performs better than it looks..non standard av out (cost cutting on components) HD out (that should be named HDMI). A serial port (really in 2017?) and an ugly LED clock radio type display

Pretty standard on boxes of this size. At least it has it for those with older TVs that have no HDMI input (previous models was HDMI only)
WD TV, etc uses the exact same

Unless you didn't have a HDMI licence

You are obviously unaware what that would be used for in a box like this

U4 has a similar display, it is actually quite good and non offensive

What people will notice on the U5 PVR over the U4 Quad is the addition of a Card Reader
Something that was a deal breaker for a lot of members in the U4 Quad thread.

Runs Enigma2 (Debian) + Android (2 Kernals running together)
So anything that is already available i'd suggest diavalo
As you say, will be interesting to see what "addons" can be used

It seems they have really listened to peoples requests on the U4 Quad and implemented them in the U5 PVR
Biggest issue with the U4 Quad was channel sorting, the Android system just didn't seem to play nicely
So now the box is Enigma2 with Android over the top.

They always wanted to make a box that competed with the Enigma2 standards people were used too.
We shall see if it all stacks up in the review

    Other points worth noting:

    Can play H265 (10 Bit)
    4K HDR
Multiple Tuner options (T2+S2, S2+S2, and more) watch one, record another at the same time.
NAS (PLEX Server, Tvheadend Server, FTP Server)
    Bluetooth 4.0

Like most all boxes, add your own HDD.
Or in this case, Micro SD card, NAS, USB Drive, etc

Default U5 PVR - Initial Unboxing and First Use

    Unboxing U5 PVR

The U5 PVR comes in a medium sized box
It comes very well packed and supported by high density foam blocks
Contents is the U5 PVR player itself and 1 smaller box holding all accessories
(Remote Control, WIFI Antenna, HDMI cable, HDD cable)

    First Impressions

Build Quality is very impressive with an all metal (alloy) body
Very solid feel with silver padded feet
Access to inside the box for HDD installation requires no tools as the alloy top is a press fit to the main chassis. Very handy.
No fans and runs dead quite.

Remote Control is full size and as good as any top end product.
This time it has Vol +- and Channel +- on the remote this time around
A HOME key to return you to your favourite Android Launcher or the default one
A TV key for normal terrestrial TV channels
An IPTV key to launch the default IPTV player
(The above will launch into an interface that looks exactly like the U4 Quad Hybrid)

    First Boot

You can tell the second you boot this player, it is a lot more hardware power than the U4 Quad Hybrid (and i still love the U4)
    It boots super fast
Getting the WIFI and Screen Size right was a bit of a fiddle, but fine once sorted
(mostly user error here, you need to go into the Android setting and turn on wifi first, before using the wizard)

It boots to the launcher screen, which is preloaded with Google products and other default apps
    No bloatware
Every snaps open fast, nothing hangs.

The box is far more complicated than the U4 Quad
There is so many more settings
The over all feel is like using a Playstation 3 menu
It is nicely laid out and easy to follow

The box is complicated, because it is like 3 boxes in 1
The software is very much a parallel universe, and in each universe you can change settings, which essentially just change the same thing.

Picture of SD and HD terrestrial looks slightly better than the U4 Quad
All my side loaded Android Apps loaded and worked without complaint
My IPTV channel list loaded via USB thumb drive in a press of a button, was too easy!

There is also online resources for the U5 PVR

    News & Information

Sorry, i haven't taken any photos or screenshots yet, they will come in time.
This was just a first look out of the box and first impression with only 1 hour spent with the U5 PVR

It is recommended to upgrade the firmware, which i have not done yet.
    Will be the next move.

    Overall First Impressions

    1. Brilliant Build Quality
    2. It is far more complicated than i expected (U4 Quad can be up and running in 10 minutes)
    3. Remote is great (but a keyboard remote will help those that dislike virtual keyboards)
    4. There are so many functions this product can preform, i think i need to start reading!

Default Installing a HDD in the U5 PVR

There is Tutorial on the smartstb website with step by step instructions
    Here:

In addition to that, i took my own photos and found one interesting point.

Remove Top Lid, it just removes by hand, is a press fit

Next, Remove Middle Cover, held in place by 4 corner screws.
(One of which is covered by a "Void Warranty if Removed" sticker. So i have no idea how you are meant to remove it whilst keeping your warranty?)

Fit your HDD to the Middle Cover with provided screws, connect power and date cable and reassemble.

If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!

    Default Firmware Upgrade

There is 2 ways to Upgrade the Firmware of the U5 PVR.

    1. Local File Update
Download the firmware from Smartstb website (stored on Google Drive, very fast downloading)
Load onto a USB device in Root and label "update.zip" (which is as it comes)
Plug the USB drive into the U5 PVR on any of the USB ports
Power Off the U5 (rear switch), Power On the U5(rear switch), Press and Hold the Front Stand-By Button until "UPDATE" is displayed
    Let the Upgrade process complete
    Done.

    2. OTA Update
    Select the ATV menu
Go to "About", then "System Upgrade", then "Upgrade Online"
You are given 3 options (Full, Normal or Linux)
Select Full if you want to wipe everything and make a fresh start
Select Normal if you want to keep your App's and Channels etc
Select Linux to install the Linux package
(Linux can be install in parallel with the Android system, it does not over write it)

All the above procedures are covered in detail here:

    Default First Time Set Up

I can strongly recommend following this pdf manual for First Time Use!
I have linked it above, but it is well worth mentioning in its own right.

It really is your Go To Manual for Setting up the U5 PVR Deluxe each and everytime

If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!
