Default Initial Thoughts on the U5 PVR

Well, with out going any further
The U5 PVR is really a U4 Quad in respect that it can handle S2, T2 and IPTV
It is also the same in respect to Internet Content delivery (YouTube, Kodi, or what ever your favourite online provider is)

It moves ahead with the fact it has a Built In Card Reader
It also has more support for Cams and Fiddling
It handles 4K file playback and streaming
It allows for an internal HHD (in fact, there was room for 2 HDDs to be mounted)
It is like 3 Boxes in 1 (Has the Terrestrial and Sat Abilities, Has the full Google Media Box suite of Apps and also Runs Linux)

I was thinking last night, of all the years i've tried to make a box an all-in-one solution
Starting back with the DM7000 (Great for Sat and MP3's, but not so great for file playback or Terrestrial)
Then other boxes came along that promised to do what we have all wanted, but somehow let us down.

I had become comfortable with the fact, that there isn't an All-in-One solution and that 2 boxes or even 3 were needed to do the tasks i wanted and i was happy with that.

Now the U4 and U5 PVR have come along, and seem to have pulled off what i had just given up on!

The next most important consideration worth noting, is Vivant really support their products with direct communication
    English speaking techs
An active forum which gets answered promptly by Staff and Techs alike
Constant firmware upgrades that address all the issues people come up with.
I have never seen that from any other Chinese manufacture with these types of products
It always seems a case of make it, promote it with big glossy ads, and deliver less than what was promised.
Then absolutely zero support if you have an issue... Dump and Run!

From what i can understand, Vivant is trying very hard to build a product we want.
Listening to people and trying to give them what they are asking for.
The U5 PVR address's some of the issues people had with the U4 Quad, and then takes things even further.

I have heard the product has been very well received in Korea and the Korean Forums are coming up with some great ideas and solutions to further development the U5 PVR.

So it is a product you can buy and enjoy the developments.
Depending on your needs, you might be more than happy with the U4 Quad, its is so much easier, anyone can use one.

But, if you want the latest with 4K and H.265 support, snappy OS, a car reader and so many more options, then the U5 PVR might be up your street

My review will continue and i come across each feature with in the box.
If anyone would like a certain feature tested, please ask and i will try to deliver and answer

    Local File Update:

Easier way to do it, instead of holding the Standby Button, keep press OK on Remote for 5-10 times after boot the box. Update will be triggered.

    1. Local File Update
Download the firmware from Smartstb website (stored on Google Drive, very fast downloading)
Load onto a USB device in Root and label "update.zip" (which is as it comes)
Plug the USB drive into the U5 PVR on any of the USB ports
Power Off the U5 (rear switch), Power On the U5(rear switch), Press and Hold the Front Stand-By Button until "UPDATE" is displayed
    Let the Upgrade process complete
    Done.

    2. OTA Update
    Select the ATV menu
Go to "About", then "System Upgrade", then "Upgrade Online"
You are given 3 options (Full, Normal or Linux)
Select Full if you want to wipe everything and make a fresh start
Select Normal if you want to keep your App's and Channels etc
Select Linux to install the Linux package
(Linux can be install in parallel with the Android system, it does not over write it)

All the above procedures are covered in detail here:

Default U5 PVR - Android TV (ATV) and Linux

The list below is based on YouTube runtime
Each operation is explained in detail.

    1. Plex Media Server test (0:09 ~ 0:57)
    127.0.0.1:32400/web/index.html

    2. Transmission Server (0:58 ~ 1:01)
    127.0.0.1:9091/transmission/web/

    3.FTP Server (1:02 ~ 1:43)
    Ftp://127.0.0.1

    4. Kodi (1:52 to 2:52)
Script plex add-on with kodi (Resume start)

    5. TVHeadend with Kodi (2:53 ~ 3:11)

    6. Live TV (eON Launcher) (3:12 ~ 3:24)
    Watching TV via tuner

    7. Plex client on Android TV (3:31 ~ 3:52)
    Resume start

    8. ATV Settings (3:57 ~ 4:10)
Setting has both ATV OS type setting and existing Android setting.

    9. SSH Server (4:17 ~ 4:56)
My Apps - SSH access to JuiceSSH App

    10. List of ATV recommended contents (Plex) (4:57 ~ End)

Basically, you do not need to know Android & Linux server etc specifically.
Once you have set up a simple server setup,
you can simply select the content and play it in the convenient UI.

Looks quite good. Following your reviews closely.

Must weight up finances as Aust $312.00 is a quite expensive box.

Just a pity it doesn't support a CAM.

Yes agreed, it is not cheap for a new kid on the block
I guess you can buy a proven Vu+ Ultimo 4K, not sure what the price of one of them is shipped to AU.
There is so much development going into the U5 PVR currently
It has been mentioned in International Forums since Christmas.
It is a challenge as it crosses over so many boarders of traditional development.
It is Linux Enigma + Android + Kodi with Plex and DVB-T

I want to find out if it can also run extra USB tuners

well mine arrived today, updated it and now the time to play, didn't realise how big the unit really is.
I know OB has given us lots of info and pics but it really surprised me.
so far I'm very impressed might have to relegate the U4 to the shed for playing and watching and put this in the lounge

Now that a few people have had it for a while now, would be interested if your opinions have changed.

Still living up to your expectations? Coping with everything you're throwing at it?

    Pros:
Plays IPTV links faster and smoother than any box i own, including a $2000 MacBook.
Normal DVB-T looks amazing out of the U5 (better than anything else i have)
YouTube in 1080p and 4K is also amazing

    Cons:
It is slightly more complicated to use then the U4 PVR
(But the reason for that, is there is more you can do with it)
I have had some lip-sync issues with some IPTV streams

I'm with OB on this, it's almost the perfect box. the U4 was good and I still use it, but the U5 is better
had an issue with the picture initially, but got a new HDMI cable and great pics now
    worth the $$$$

Thanks OB & efab. Having an ageing Beyonwiz DP-P2 as my day to day PVR (on an older non-Smart LCD TV), this is certainly on the list of possibilities. My 2nd PVR is a Beyonwiz T2, so I'm aware of how complicated things can get as it wasn't the easiest machine to learn, but now is purring along quite nicely. It's just not as well rounded as the U5. Price wise, they're actually quite comparable.

Having recently transitioned to NBN (unlimited) from a restricted ADSL Bigpond plan, I'm starting to see the value in streaming possibilities. Just have to wrap my head around the best places to go looking for IPTV streams.

    Regards
    Rob

    As I have no gear.
How is the sensitivity/selectivity and the ability to suck the signal from the sky as compared to the Mecool/Videostrong and real STB
If anyone can offer a quick rundown.
    Thanks
