The Good Guys have a 14" lappy for $299 in this weeks deals
HP 14-am085TU $299
Next thing to consider is EOFY sales this month
Hi everybody,
Yesterday my wife's 6 and a half year old Compaq Presario CQ 62 died with the "black screen of death." I tried all the basic things - hard re-set - battery, charged the BIOS internal battery and removed and re-seated the memory - no cigar!. I DON'T KNOW IF ANYBODY HAS ANY FURTHUR IDEAS - apart from the motherboard repair -replacement and or to the rubbish bin for the CQ62?
My wife needs a basic laptop for some internet surfing and emails. With buying a new laptop I have heard reports that Lenovo has some issues and with warranty and Acer has issues with quality.
What do people think of ASUS or HP 250 or similar laptop.
Any ideas please!
Thank You.

If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!
I'm an ASUS guy myself, but if its just for that then oceanboy is right....wait for the sales. You might even land a cheapie with an SSD.

If it's any help I have an with 256GB SSD pre installed with Windows 10 and Microsoft Office 2016.
Just sitting here gathering dust (surplus to requirements)
But...... it's second hand. (PM me if your interested).
You may well prefer the Intel Celeron's being offered by many in the retail market.
In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" rather than "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort".
The police still haven't seen the funny side, my lap top's been confiscated and the wife has gone off to her mum's.

I can vouch for anything Seymour has, always top spec in great condition.

I've always been a Toshi-bah man.
Does the compaq boot from a CD?
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

It really depends on the Compaq model, Recent models I've come across all booted from CD as long as that feature was activated in the BIOS, I'm sure you're aware the Compaq brand remained in use by HP for lower-end systems until 2013 when it was discontinued.

If you can find a used Dell Precision 6400 at a sensible price they are a good laptop with nice big screen. They were big bucks and mainly used by corporate users.
Great idea to try and boot from CD isemmens. I am thinking it might be the visual display - motherboard issue. I might have a chat to IT department near where I work and have a look "into the guts of the computer." Although i think the cost to fix will probably be a "bin job."
With the end of the financial year I will check the sales! HP or an ASUS sound ok. 14" Hp at $299.00 sounds okay as well for an average lappy!
Cheers - thanks guys!
This might be an option
