I'm still quite intrigued by this particular thread.

I don't know about other members but I do not have a comprehensive picture of the computer in question, other than it's an Acer laptop (Post #1) and that the video card has been changed.

Please flesh this out a little more for me, bunyipbilly, by supplying the following additional information.

    1/. Model number.

    2/. Operating system (full details).

3/. When you state that you have changed the video card, can you post full details of the original AND the replacement.
    What video driver is installed?

4/. What live CD did you try? Again, full details will be useful.

Video card NVidia Geforce 8600M GT removed then put back in and driver installed.

Please check that I am looking at the same machine - ? I, still, cannot determine how you changed the video card?

Have a look at and see if this works.

Yes, it is the right machine.
The card is held in by four screws and could also be called VGA board and thermal module.

Well, since you are having the issue with LiveCD, I am guessing you have a hardware problem. Since LiveCDs will not work, I am guessing this will not either. You can hold down F8 on boot and select Safemode for Windows XP.

Does everything look normal on boot, at the selftest level? That is, if you entered BIOS, does the text display normal? If so, I suggest you reset BIOS to factory defaults.

Have you looked at and tried any of the suggestions in the link posted by lsemmens in post #24, where he said "Have a look at this solution and see if this works."?

Perhaps you are not aware that words coloured blue conceal an URL (link).

well he said he set screen resolution to 1920x1080 and the manual says 1680x1050 bound to do strange things.
He has been asked to try lower resolution several times, guess he doesnt really want a solution.

Strange how some people get on forums and simply try to put others down just for their own satisfaction.
The idea of a forum is give assistance to others who ask about some problem they can't resolve themselves.
To make it clear for those individuals who can't comprehend -: I have tried all of the suggestions put forward, plus many, many more , but still there is no solution.
The internet puts forward some other suggestions, but they don't work either.

I've put the original card back twice but it is still the same.
When I remove the card there is no onboard video.

bunyipbilly, please respond to the question I asked in my post #29.

I realise that you have said "...I have tried all of the suggestions put forward, plus many, many more , but still there is no solution."

That response however, does not answer my question as the term, "all suggestions" can mean anything.

...and in case you were referring to me, I am not trying to put you down, merely attempting to obtain a specific answer to a specific question.

Yes I did try "that" solution and all suggestions means what it says -: "all suggestions".

Does the screen show correctly when you enter BIOS? At what stage does the multiple image issue start? It looks like a driver issue.

    lsemmens beat me to it!

    Please try the following.

1/. Boot into the BIOS and note condition of display. Then shut down the computer.

2/. Download a copy of 'Hiren's Boot CD' from .

Note: Click on the link Hirens.BootCD.15.2.zip approx 2/3 down page at:

    Filename: Hirens.BootCD.15.2.zip
    Filesize: 592.5 MB (621283886 bytes)
    ISO MD5: 7EFC81ADBBD551D56F6021C439C6837C
    ZIP MD5: D342BBD6BF7554ABA24A376E41675DBF

Open the archive, and burn the Hiren's.BootCD.10.0.iso to CD and then boot the computer from that. (Use the appropriate procedure to ensure that the computer boots from the CD and not from Hard drive).

Hirens Boot CD opens with three options:

    (1) Boot from Hard Drive.
    (2) Start Boot CD.
    (3) Start from Windows XP.

When the computer starts, select 'Start BOOT CD'. Do not select 'Boot from Hard Drive'.
Once the computer has booted from the Boot CD, note the appearance of the screen.
    Shut down the computer.

Reboot the computer again from the CD, but this time elect to 'Start from Windows XP'.

This will force the computer to boot from Windows XP using the version already resident (including display driver) on the Hirens Boot CD.
Note the appearance of the display.

Please post the results so that we know the outcome.

Considering it's Windows XP, isn't this some kind of virus that's doing this?
