    Default Six desktops in one

    Hi,

    Help wanted desperately.
My acer laptop desktop is divided into six and doesn't restore.
I have changed the video card but still no joy.
    Does anyone have any clues?

What on earth is an "acer laptop desktop"?

I assume that you have changed a video card because there is no picture on the monitor in use. Is this correct?

I also assume that "is divided into six" means that there are six partitions on the hard drive. Is this correct?

If this is so, please post details of what the six partitions are used for.

    What operating system(s) is/are installed?

What do you mean by "doesn't restore"?

Please post more coherent/accurate details, such as the correct model number, type (brand/model number of) monitor etc.

Without such relevant information it is impossible for anyone to even begin to offer any meaningful advice.

Just reading between the lines tristen.... I think he means he has a laptop, but the home screen (with shortcuts etc) is commonly referred to as the desktop... not it being a 'desktop computer'.

The divided into 6 has me puzzled also, but I took it to read it is one screen divided into 6 segments.

If this is the case, it sounds like something in display settings, or there is some form of virus/malware causing this.

I'm also assuming 'doesn't restore' means using windows system restore, to restore settings to an earlier time/date fails to 'restore' the screen back to its normal appearance.

Agreed, some more specific info would be helpful.

Yeah, the way I interpret it is six desktop screens in the space of where you would normally find the normal, single desktop screen (with start button, icons, etc.). Not sure if it's repeating or six different iterations of the desktop though.

Sounds like the resolution is set/outputting really small, much smaller than the screen's recommended resolution, and somehow it thinks/is being given a message to repeat the image. Weird indeed.

Check everything - graphics options, display settings, extended display settings (if set to repeat desktop on another monitor), any word that implies repetition - "tiled" or "tile displays" and so on. Sounds like 1920x1080 that's been filled tile style with six images of 640x480. Sounds like trying to convert VGA image to HD and something has gone wrong somewhere.

Are you outputting to a monitor of any kind, or is this on the actual laptop screen?

Sorry about the vague description, but yes, it is the monitor on the laptop itself which is divided into six parts showing the same desktop, and I have it set at 1920x1080.
This situation occurred out of the blue on bootup without changing any settings. I even put the old video card back, but to no avail.
Searching the web "they" keep saying it' s the video card, but I know it is not.

Could you maybe do us a printscreen/screenshot of it by any chance? I'm just so curious to see what this looks like, never heard of it/seen it before.

So, it started doing this before changing any video card (you changed it to see if it would help, it didn't, you changed it back to the original again) as I understand it?

Also, if you do a screenshot/printscreen and it only shows one normal desktop when you paste it into paint, then it will definitely give you another indication something is up for sure.

Oh yes, what OS (I'm assuming Windows) version are you running?

Have you tried setting at a lower resolution?

How could you change the video card? Most laptops of which I am aware have integrated video. IOW you must change the MOBO. Try and boot from a live CD. that will, at least, rule out hardware issues. Otherwise, put your Windoze recovery disk in and let it do it's thing, eventually it will give you the option to repair you current installation.

A Specific model number of the laptop may help us, too.

    Thanks for the input.

Well, I've seen (and indeed used) multiple monitors connected to a single computer, but not a single monitor showing six individual pictures.

    I'm intrigued!

Like below using Windows key plus Backspace key to display (six) open applications simultaneously?

...but I have a sneaking suspicion that this is not what you mean because you say "showing the same desktop...".

Man, I just remember now, there was a function in Windows 8 where one could zoom out of your desktop screen and it would show all the desktops you had like a mosaic, and you could switch among them. I wonder if it's not this?

What happens if you click on one of the desktops ?

Try Windows + control + F4 keys and see if it closes the desktops.....

In order to navigate between different desktops, use Win+Ctrl+Left or Right Arrow key

    And as hoe says:
In order to close virtual desktops, use Win+Ctrl+F4. [on each one]

I don't think it is Snap view, because I think that is only 2x2, but you could also try. Settings, System, Multitasking, turn off all the sliders under SNAP.

You wouldhope that bunyipbilly has solved his problem by now. It's a pity that he has not returned to advise what he found.

I'm back, sorry about the long pause.
I gave my computer to a so-called expert, but he couldn't resolve the problem so I'll post a screenshot as soon as I pick up the laptop.
I never realized my little problem would create such interest so stay tuned until I show you what I'm dealing with.

I suspect the laptop screen is rooted, is the display okay using an external monitor?

This is what I'm dealing with.

Anything I do or try still has six screens, and it is very hard to decipher anything without a magnifying glass. No, I'm not blind !!
I have tried changing the resolution, and booting from live cd still has six sections.
The laptop works fine except for the little problem or should I say six little problems
