Hmmm, will he pay back his taxpayer funded salary?
Oops I forgot I was a Kiwi

Definitely looks like a Kiwi - like a combination of Richie McCaw and Sonny Bill Williams.

Basicaly I dont care where you are born but to stand for Federal Parliament, I believe you should be an Australian citizen, either by birth or naturlisation and hold no other documentation giving you rights in an other country.
In theory this means you have no allegencies to another country.
If we ever decide on being a Republic, I want who ever is ellected to be 'Head of State' to be BORN HERE !
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!
Well, I'm not a Greens fan, but he's taken ownership of the mistake, but I have to ask, seeing as he's been naturalised since his mid teens, surely when people run for parliament all these type of checks would be run on them, and not just rely on the "honour" system, I cant believe that the fault would be all his.
Cheers

Gotta agree.
These people debate the fate of the country and can't do a simple check? Come on!
It's probably because they sort of agree not to check into each others background because of what might be lurking there.

Well, looks like some good has come of it...........if you can call this good
Tony Abbott finally proves he’s an Australian
Seems that politicians only have to demonstrate their bona fides when it damn well suits them.
Ludlum took the piss out of Bob Day when he was forced to resign with his problems so I wonder how Ludlum feels to have egg all over his face!
The Eagle Flies High!
100% spot on.
Putting to one side for a moment that he roots trees and whales, the facts are we are all subject to background checks for everything - credit applications, medicals, insurance, working with kids etc etc. All the background checks on politicians seem to be if they are gay, if they ever had extreme left wing/right wing connections, if they took a tax payer funded holiday and who they have slept with.
You would think there would be a more thorough screening, that isn't just at party level where a lot of administrative duties at grass roots are done by volunteers, by a commonwealth security agency. I think the Australian Federal Police should conduct retrospective screening on all pollies at a state and federal level, especially in these times.
As a former contractor to the public service, I had to have a security clearance. This was done by a section of the Defence Department.
Some of the bullsh*t I was required to provide was difficult, but it started with Australian citizenship followed by a police check...
I find it difficult to believe he didn't know the requirements. What is the cost of this fraud?

My take on it is it could have been worse
He could have been a Pom

While on the subject of Kiwis:
"Derryn Nigel Hinch (born 9 February 1944 in New Zealand) is an Australian Senator for Victoria and media personality, best known for his work on Melbourne radio and television ..."
He has also done porridge which I thought excluded one from entering politics.

If Australia is a democracy why, then, is voting compulsory?
"What has changed between the arrival of the First Fleet and today?"
"Wearing leg irons is now not required."

Even more so when you realise that a petition was raised on Change.org three years ago (2014) challenging Ludlam on this very question:
Show the public your New Zealand Citizen renunciation form, proving you were not elected to our Parliament illegally.
You could be forgiven for thinking that this petition, frivolous as it may have appeared to some at the time, would have at least set off a few alarm bells somewhere in the party structure, if not with Ludlam himself.
But apparently not:
Ludlam quits Senate over dual citizenship
The dual citizenship bungle that forced the shock resignation of WA Greens senator Scott Ludlum yesterday, was being pursued more than three years ago via an online petition.
But Mr Ludlum, who quit after accepting he had been ineligible to be a senator during the past nine years, said he was unaware of the petition or Freedom of Information requests about his New Zealand citizenship.
This is definitely developing a very bad smell.
Agree with you Dan.
That petition makes it all a bit strange.
Fellow Earthian from the United States started that petition. I wonder why everybody seemed to ignore it? If this bloke were serious then, at least he could have started the petition in his own name. In the end, Scott, may have to "pay for his crime", if, in fact, he knowingly misled the party, the public and parliament. The fact that he appears to have taken ownership of his problem, indicates to me that, perhaps he was genuinely "innocent of any wrongdoing" (that is - intentional wrongdoing).
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

And another Greens pollie falls victim to the dual-citizenship rule.
Deputy Leader, Larissa Waters.
Wonder how many more there are in the political circus who can't seem to recall they have dual citizenship.
