But I cannot get to any restore point.

As porkop said, try re-installing the audio drivers... regardless.

If no luck there, follow what Tiny posted about running System File Checker.

If that doesn't sort it, you may have to locate and correct a file in the registry.

If that doesn't work, then it's re-install windows 7, upgrade to windows 10... or just live without the sounds.

As I mentioned, I turn all my windows sounds off.

Thanks, mtv - I found that Microsoft page a coupla weeks back, but running the SFC came up with an "alles ist in ordnung" message.
Basically, my laptop keeps telling me that everything is hunky dorey, and my system sounds keep not working. I'm absolutely sure it was one of the Windows updates that stuffed things, so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.
As for doing anything in the registry - I don't think so. I'm not NEARLY confident enough.
Thanks to everyone who provided input: I'm grateful anyway !

Installing a new theme will just prove that the system is working correctly. I suspect that something has just corrupted your original theme hence the installation of a new one. My thinking is exclude item at a time, If you are getting sounds from other events, I suspect that your driver is working correctly. What happens if you play an audio file or a youtube link?

Unrelated, but: Actually your "alles ist in ordnung" message has got me curious, are you running an alternate language (I'm guessing, German) for any reason or has something set your language to "Das Fatherland" without any input from you?

After reading that the problem commenced after a recent Windows update, I think it wise to download and install the genuine Windows 7 drivers for your particular model, from the Dell website as I advised earlier. I have never had a problem with drivers provided by a computer manufacturer, but the same cannot be said for Microsoft.

Being able to play Windows sounds when you created another user account led me to assume that the problem is not driver-related, but it could be that something like a registry entry has become corrupted and is causing the current problem.

It would not be the first time that a Windows update has broken something (....and it won't be the last either, unfortunately).

Happens more often than not, sadly.

Just today I did a Win10 update and had to re-install a program as it wouldn't run afterwards.

Nothing to lose re-installing the Dell audio drivers, but I am leaning towards a registry error.

Try the drivers M-R and let's know the result.

There is software out there that will allow you to build or re build a sound scheme
Try doing a search for iFX Seven Sound Creator
In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" rather than "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort".

    Yeah, that sounds familiar.

These Windows updates are a real crock of... that's what they are, in truth. Latest one I keep getting is USB devices not getting recognized.

And over the last few weeks literally downloaded like 10 gigs of stuff, for what? Do they not realize how much one has to pay for all this data downloading? This is not America where there is uncapped fibre-optic in every bathroom.

Visited the Dell Oz site (again) and had another go at downloading their diagnostics thingummy, but it just doesn't want to come on board. Sighh ... Did one of those auto check for drivers runs and won two Intels - rapid something and graphics. Put 'em in. Did a let me find it run for audio drivers and found a fairly old old, but installed it anyway (that's two drivers of well over 200 mb ea.). Still no system sounds. Gunna give it away: taking too much of everyone else's time as well as my own.
    My cat is going to have to accept that the familiar shutting down sound isn't going to happen before I chuck him off my knee ... :-}

In my experience the Dell diagnostics are very effective.

Dell have many websites. I have sometimes found their U.S. website to be a better place to locate the correct drivers.

When you say "Did one of those auto check for drivers runs", did you get it from the Dell website or somewhere else?

Be warned that there are many so-called diagnostics programs which are 'cons', i.e. they are either ineffective and/or load other garbage. They are not genuine diagnostics programs at all but a vehicle to load unwanted software such as advertising, spyware etc. The so-called driver checking programs can be particularly troublesome in this regard. DO NOT USE THEM! Use drivers only from the Dell website.

Also, Intel drivers are useful only for an Intel chipset, i.e. if your audio chip is not made by Intel the driver will not work. The driver must match the particular hardware that you need a driver for.

Gunna give it away: taking too much of everyone else's time as well as my own.

Yes, it can get frustrating particularly for the inexperienced person, but persevere and the odds are you will eventually succeed.

If you post the exact model number of your computer, I/we am/are happy to do some further research in an effort to help to provide a solution.

The model number will also help to locate the exact URL for downloading the appropriate Dell audio drivers from their website.

    Hi again, tristen.
Yep, it was the Dell site I was talking about: I never go to those free [whatever] sites. And yes, I have Intel on board.
I just can't get my hands on the Dell diagnostics program: I rather fancy that my Dell Inspiron has been corrupted big-time - meaning my user account.
My C: drive is full of the most amazing shit that I never saw a couple of weeks back: the .tmp files (and there are lots more than in the screen-grab) are being added daily and I cannot delete them, even though I am a user/administrator, and the other stuff - all those loooooooong letters/numbers things - are a turtle mystery. WHY are they there now ?!
So getting error messages when I try to download the Dell diagnostics or create a restore point isn't terribly surprising, I think.
I believe this has all started since one of the daily Microsoft updates of a week or two ago.

And this is the i.d. info. re my laptop. I hope.

Hmmm ... Tricky to respond to, Leigh.

I must be a terrible wanker, I think; and the odd thing is that mostly I will drop a French or an Italian phrase - I have only some odd phrases in German ... Maybe I was thinking of that one because of the 'orderly' environment ? - or what Microsoft reckons is, anyway ... If only.

I have downloaded the correct audio driver (Audio_Driver_2R14K_WN_6.0.1.7288_A00.EXE) for your model from the Dell Australia website at . Click on the link in order to satisfy yourself that it is indeed the location for drivers for your particular model.

I have uploaded it to from where you can download it to your computer.

It's an executable (.exe) file so when you have downloaded it, go to its download directory then simply click on it to run it.

Follow any on-screen instructions, which might appear.

Once the file has completed executing, you will need to power down (close and switch off) the computer and then power up again.

Check to see if it has made any difference and let us know the outcome.

If it has not cured the problem we at least know that the correct audio driver has been installed but that additional works still needs to be done.

Those MSl folders/files are Microsoft Installer log files. They should have been cleaned up by the program that logged them when it was finished installing.
It could be they belong to Windows Update or another windows process that is trying to complete installation & will be auto deleted when it's finished unless the installation failed.
If they don't disappear eventually, then you will be able to delete them once the process stops trying to install, which will most likely be after the next Windows Update.
    Cheers, Tiny

I think that was the same audio driver that I downloaded yesterday (same size); but it didn't install properly then, I realize with hindsight.
Alas ! - not an extra peep, tristen.
Thanks SO MUCH for that help !

Have had numerous subsequent updates, Tiny; but those files still can't be deleted. What you tell me confirms (I think) my suspicion that it was an update that started this whole schemozzle: some weeks ago there wasn't one of them to be seen.

Can't recall if you've tried SFC. It's a Windoze system file checker that finds and (usually) fixes dud drivers. is the syntax. The link explains how it all works.
