Default Public Hospital rant of the day

Geez I know I have done this one before, but how bad do they have to get ?

Rang an ambulance for my wife. It turned up 2 and a half hours later.

They took her to the nearest biggest hospital. No beds. They dumped her in an emergency department chair at 1.55 pm and said they would organise some pain relief and left.

3.15 - I asked where is the pain relief from nearly and hour and a half ago ? No one knew. They will ask a doctor.

3.45 - Pain relief and blood taken.

6.25 - Ask when she is likely to get a bed. No beds, she is also not allowed to eat or drink.

8.00 - Got emergency department cubicle bed.

12 Midnight - Got ward bed.

So 2 and half hours for an ambulance and over 6 hours to even go in to Emergency in a bed.

75% of staff are female and 50% are Indian/African/Arab/Muslim/Something.

Cannot even understand what many are saying......most nurses are Indian.

A great advertisement yet again for Private Health Insurance.

This is in Victoria......how does your state compare ? I had actually heard of people waiting 10 hours in Emergency at this hospital but dismissed it as exaggeration. I would hate to see a Fri/Sat night.

Well apart from the ambo wait I dont see the problem, what excellent service you get in Victoria

Here in Mandurah the ambo takes you to peel 'health', then you spend two hours in the ambo before they even take you inside..................then you wait at least 8 hours before being seen and then if you are deemed to be seriously ill they put you in another ambo and take you to a real hospital

    Hi Andrew,

When I was working in the islands (Solomons and PNG) I became very sick and had to wait a full day to be taken back to Honiara, and all the time there was a sanctimonious bible puncher from the peace corps praying over me.

I told him to fvck off several times and that just made him more persistent and louder.

My gun was in the hut but if I had been able to reach it ...................

I bypass the Ambos, When wife needs a hospital, it's usually the Cardiac unit. If I call an ambo. Even though the depot is around the corner it could take a couple of hours for the volunteers to all come in and get my missus (we are in a small town). They HAVE to take her to the nearest hospital which is no more than a nursing home. They then have to call the doctor in (we only have one for the town) who then has to authorise a transfer to the big smoke. Back into the ambulance to the next town where they transfer her to the paid crews, and then another hours drive to the Hospital. In all, on a good day, about 4 hours from home to City Hospital.

I just bundle her into the car and drive the hour to the City Hospital. Many of the staff know us in A&E, so it does make it a little easier in that we don't have to go through the story over and over again. Some days it still takes several hours to get from A&E onto the ward which is the cardiac ward so, again, a specialised unit. We know many of the staff there now. In our times in and out of the place, one of the cleaners has even built a house, and had a baby, so our experience is over many years and many visits. Given the complaints we hear about the public system here in SoufOrz. You won't get any from us, we cannot sing the staff's praises high enough. Yes, many of the staff are immigrants, but I cannot find fault with any of them. In fact, it was one doctor who had not long arrived in Australia and had to "do his time" to become accredited here, that picked up my wife's condition and referred her on to a brilliant cardiologist. At that stage all we knew was she was having Chest pain with no attendant symptoms to indicate if it was actually cardiac or muscular.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

This is not good enough .....

I did experience service like this at RPA in Sydney 20 years ago .... took 5 hours wait in the waiting room before being seen and then 8 hours being treated in an emergency cubicle before being sent home (& it was my father who had just had a Lung cancer operation there the week before)

was hoping things had improved by now ....

at our local hospital (recently) I have had no problem .....

Anyone who supports reducing waiting times and good health care gets my vote ....

They ALL do. The opposition, whoever they happen to be, lead the charge. But once elected nothing changes.....and the wheels of the bus...

I went to my local Hospital 3 weeks ago, thinking i was having or had a heart attack.
Could not have got better service.

Called an Ambo, then thought stuff it, its only 3k's, got my uncle to drive me.
Turned up at Hospital, said the magic 3 words, feel faint, chest pains, pain in my left arm.

    Whooska!

In the ER Theatre and on the table, 12 probes placed on my body
Two female nurses fussing over me
Then a stunning Female Doctor at my side (now i have a heart problem).

All vitals taken, kept me in for 2 hours just to be sure.
Let me go home, but wanted to see me the following morning

Straight back in at 9am the follow day, bloods taken

Went to pay (as i always have had to pay in the passed), thats ok Sir, its all been bulk billed.

    Wow, thats service!!!

But i know exactly what admin is saying, if went to Geelong Hospital or one of the larger Hospitals in Melbs, it would have been hopless.

I found admin, if you find you are waiting too long, start telling them your vision is going all dark around the edges and you can only see a spot in front of you, that normally gets them moving.

I drove myself there when I thought I was having one. I said much the same thing. I reckon Whooshka covers it. Straight in, wired up. Turns out I actually DID have an attack.

    I couldn't fault them.

    That's irresponsible
If everybody did that we'd all have to wait longer for treatment

Yeah right. The doctors at our local just come in (when they can be found) and go through the pile and rearrange them to do the cases they want. The triage nurses hate them and have to put them back in order. I've seen it happen.

So you've somehow remotely diagnosed admin's wife to determine she wasn't really sick, eh?

Firstly, ambo's don't transport patients to hospital who they assess to not warrant hospital treatment.

Secondly, admin's wife was admitted to a ward... when there was a severe shortage of beds.

It certainly suggests that the ambos and hospital staff felt she was actually really sick.

The gall of suggesting otherwise is on you.

When I had my stroke last year I was in the emergence one minute and having a MRI in 15 Minutes Later

I have no complaint SO far on the Public system and I and my wife have been there a lot. The System is always there for us and has help us on many occasions. The Service are prompt and efficient. Maybe they know I'm a Labor Voter and they give me this bit next time I will never Vote for labor or Liberal again because of other reasons. I have been to 5 hospitals in the last 12 months and I found all is good, Maybe I'm lucky They even give me a Private room when I was in Public at no extra. Big rooms Bigger TV's and the Good nurses all for the same price $0. But when it comes to the Public dentist is going down the drain quickly.
I was in private 20 years ago when my wife had the first child, the Privare Doctor was called out or stuck for a public patient and cannot leave, After my wife had my Daughter she was taken to HER PRIVATE ROOM and because the Hospotal was full the Hospital aske the wife can she allow Public Patient to be in her room. After this we were in the Public system for all our other kids and everything went well, No complaint there cost us NOTHING and they gave the Wife money for having the Child.
Maybe I'm lucky, We we need some luck today

Yeah, i would have driven myself also.

Yes, they do not muck around when you suggest concerns about your heart.
I was close to being sent to Geelong, just because they don't take no chances.

One of the benefits of a small town, you go to Hospital, all the staff know you, you'll be the only one in their, no waiting.
