We already do that every four years at the ballot box.

And while I agree that what you say may have been the point if the original plebiscite - with every person of voting age being required to vote on the issue, even if it was still not binding - the postal vote is nothing more than a poll of people who decide to return the forms. A complete waste of time that will have no bearing on the true views of Australians either way and will in no way settle this issue.

I will be voting NO because if the Yes Vote wins it won't be the end of it but just the start of things to come!

I work in a place where there a large number of "lefties" and the whole gay marriage / rights for minorities / touchy feely politically correct thing is way out of control. All this stuff is constantly being rammed down my throat to the point that I'm now inclined to vote "no" just because I'm so sick and bloody tired of hearing the constant whining. These are people whose parents never said "no" and they always get their way, but where does it stop?

If gay marriage is legalised, will they pull their heads in, be happy, go and live happy and positive lives and make a positive contribution to the community? No they won't. They'll still want more. My guess is that that the next step will be: "we are being discriminated against, because we can't conceive children naturally. We demand preferential and free access to IVF programmes, adoption and so on.".

I vote NO for Turd burglars and MATT Munches. I have a grip against these type of people that effected me at the work place. They look after them self and discriminate against the others that are not like them

So what was said about same sex marriage last election? Nothing. So no, we didn't vote on that issue....like I said, had we then the makeup of government may or may not have looked completely different.

NOTHING will settle this issue except avoiding the people and letting the pollies just tell you what to do, despite the fact that you employ them. After this happens don't whine when they go "Oh Goodie!!!" and then keep doing it for other major social issues that you haven't voted for.

Seriously? It was just over 12 months ago and was one of the 'hot' topics. The ALP endorsed it and advised they would introduce a bill within the first 100 days to make SSM law, the LNP wanted the Plebiscite before allowing a conscious vote.

Really? I was under the impression that the ALP platform stated that, upon election, debate would ensue and would not be binding on anyone. I may have missed a commitment to introduce legislation, but I didn't think so. I could always be wrong as I for one am certainly not perfect.....

Don't get the idea that I am against it, I couldn't care less one way OR the other as it's inconsequential to me. I am more interested in the mostly successful Australian democratic process being maintained.....something I fear is being eroded by single interest groups on a daily basis.....

No need to vote at all on that one, Northern suburbs of Melbourne and Western Suburbs of Sydney already have plenty of people doing exactly that. Why we recognise it, I dont know.

A point that was made to me on Friday night is, as present, a long partner ship of a couple is not legally established by time, should one partner die, the other has no common law rights as say a husband and wife has in organizing their ex partner's legal affairs, etc . It is this flaw that the vote is trying to rectify
I'll call bullshit on that one. Not at you, at the person that told you that.

They enjoy the same legal rights, heard of De Facto relationships ?

I'll be ticking yes because I'm an atheist and I believe in equal rights. If there's marriage equality then shit like this won't happen: (a man died in Australia and his partner had no say in the funeral arrangements because his marriage wasn't recognised).

I'm not really sure why the federal government is even involved with marriage, other than to keep a record of it. It should just be a civil matter like most contracts.

Being able to vote online or over the phone for popular issues would in theory, reduce the costs considerably. It would be much faster to get the results and a lot easier to vote regularly. There would of course need to be a lot of security and fraud protection.

    Spot on!

If this 'Poll' is weighted just as a public opinion, not mandatory and not legally binding then they could have just let these guys do it:

That probably would have only costed 1-2million even with the reward points, 20c worth of points for every participant, LOL.
They also have things nutted out really well with fraud protection and people should be given a few weeks to submit their OPINION to avoid server overload like our census disaster.

Such a poll could also include questions of a lot of other hot topics where I wish I could have a say to the government, if they would REALLY care what we think and want, which they don't !
Lobbying is the only way to get anything done with this government and that is reserved for the wealthy and powerful MINORITY.

Because marriage is primarily a religious ceremony and commitment between a man and a woman. And why on earth would ANYONE, no matter what side they are from, trust politicians to do things for us ?
Gee, lets put Bill Shorten and the Greens in charge to change anything they see fit to benefit our lives. Who could possibly foresee a problem with that one......

I'll be ticking no because I'm an athiest and I believe in equal rights.
I am more than happy to vote yes for any union they want to create for themselves, rather than raining on my parade.

They are not Australians...........you could probably find similar in dozens of other countries.

Glad to see someone else actually sees the bigger picture and implications from it. My original post didn't just mention other items like Climate Change and Aboriginal rights for nothing. They are all very much linked to this topic.

For those that havent been around here long, I spent a few decades of my life when I was younger as a very hardcore left wing socialist. I was heavily involved in a left wing trade union and I can tell you, trade union training involved plenty of discussion about protesting. What to do and how to do it...all illegal of course, urine bombs, buckets of marbles and ball bearings under the mounted police horses - its very akin to terrorist training. Of course back then, when you engaged in that sort of stuff those activities certainly didn't make the government change their mind on an issue, they just dug in more.

Now of course is a different matter as 25-30 years have passed and back then the left made some systematic plans for the future. Long term plans, it would take a generation to implement. With union control, they simply start on the young.....now its as young as kindergarten. Start teaching "gender inequality" to 4 year olds and gently explain to the boys they can wear dresses etc.

Moving out from kindergarten in to Primary and Secondary school, children are then subject to crap like the "Safe Schools" program. Under this program, you would think that the majority of children are gay, transgender or transexual. The program is nothing but leftist social engineering that plays with the minds of the vulnerable. Engineered by fruitcake leftist, hardline Marxist, and active member of Socialist Alternative Roz Ward, it is now being made compulsory in Victorian schools. Ward claims that half of children are gay.....a ridiculous comment but more likely to be a target she is aiming for.

Now if you aren't a mentally disturbed enough child after being brainwashed through kindergarten, primary and secondary schools, best you brace yourself for University. Socialists and other leftists over the last 20 years have ruined our universities to the point that they teach fake history. I was recently astounded when I met a 25 year old female (with a Year 12 pass) who had NO IDEA that Australian had convicts sent here. Last year I corrected my neighbours daughters year 12 history teacher who gave them study sheets on Gallipoli that contained an appalling amount of wrong information and inaccuracies.

We have recently had Green left controlled councils in Victoria cancelling Australian Day celebrations. We have had similar deciding to build a "statue to the fallen" in Richmond to honor those that died with a syringe hanging out of their arm. And at the same time, want to pull down statues of our founding fathers.

And to round it all up, next time you watch the news and see leftwing protesters doing their block about something idiotic, you will find they are primarily the same left wing protesters that attend every protest.
But what would I know ? I was one of them. Some major ones are paid to attend, most like me just got free transportation to protests, free refreshments, free lunch, then free alcohol and transport home. You can see why it may be preferable to getting a job for some of the smelly unwashed ones.

In a nutshell, ALL LEFTIST CAUSES ARE RELATED, HAVE THE SAME GOAL AND ARE RUN BY THE SAME ORGANISATIONS.

If you vote yes, then you are just giving them another notch on their belt and encouragement to move on to something bigger. Remember the leftist organised "Sorry Day" ? What a momentous moment....all we have to do is say sorry for something we didnt do and that would be the end of all aboriginal problems and claims.

Fast forward...9 years later. They are trying to have the constitution rewritten to give themselves a status above that of all other citizens.....where are the "equal rights" there Sektor ? Aboriginals already own 50% of the Northern Territory and 85% of its coast line. Just trust the politicians to get it right for us you think ? Pffttttttt..........

I'll sum it up in one sentence - " Dont feed the trolls " , the more you keep feeding them, the more and more they want.

I am honestly looking forward to the next federal election and seeing labour elected. The country is going to completely sink down the drain and I will sit here and piss myself laughing at everyone going "Wow, you just dont see these things coming".

It certainly is. Thats why the rich, wealthy, famous and powerful MINORITY are lobbying for Gay Marriage because us silly poor people and are not educated enough to make a sensible decision.

Nearly 75% of marriages in Australia are done by civil celebrants, with no religious connotations whatsoever. Marriage is no longer viewed (and hasn't been for a very long time) as a primarily religious ceremony, it is more so a commitment ceremony.

That's where the 'religious' argument falls over, it just doesn't come into play.

Whilst the country is going down the gurgler due to corrupt/inept/criminally incompetent/'minorities' we are being bombarded by stupidities such as SSM in the media and the infantile antics of our so called elected 'leaders' who prefer to score points over actually doing what is good for the future of my grandchildren.

If as much energy went into advancing the common good of the country as is spent on these side shows I would have no fear for the future................................as it is now..................I think we're all well and truly f*cked

I don’t really care who or what they marry, what I DON’T like is when minority groups trying to shove their leftist ideology down my throat. IMO same sex couples should not have the legal right to adopt any kids at all it’s not a balanced family life style. So it's a big NO for me, it's PC going mad and if the yes vote wins it will only be the start for more to come.

So we should give everyone who won't give up after one defeat their way just so it won't come up again and again?

likewise. This whole agenda will start with same sex marriage , then the lefties will demand more changes ( aka inclusion ) so you can marry your cat / dog / muslim goat ( therefore have legal sex with them ) . Then the lefties will want to include pedophiles marrying children !!

the Safe Schools bullcrap has not reached Queensland yet luckily , i dont think us uneducated bogans will allow it
