    Default Phone line issues

Our never ending line issues have resulted in 4 faults lodged and tech's dispatched to fix the fault 4 times in the last month, last time was last Friday and we were told it was fixed. This morning woke up to the phone ringing a strange long ring a couple of times and when i picked up i could just hear the message " your call could not be connected " which is weird as i hadn't called anyone, line had more crackle than a pork roast and no internet connection so called Iinet again.
As soon as i got answered i told them to check our account and look thru all the recent faults and i stated that the 2nd last tech went thru the house and confirmed all our hardware and cabling was fine and that the fault was in the street. They wouldn't lodge a fault until we went thru the handbook 101 of fault finding which took an hour of me on my mobile, then they finally agreed to lodge a fault.
A question for anyone knowledgeable on phone lines, would the phone ringing like it was with no one on the end be because of a short in the cable ? We have no dial tone and heaps of static.

Line faults can cause all kinds of erratic things.

I've experienced similar ringing with a line fault.

High-resistance joints often affect ringing as the ring voltage is intermittent.

Good luck getting it fixed mate.... took me over a month and 4 tech visits for Telstra to finally allocate a different pair in the street.

Useless Manila faults people kept telling me the line tested OK, even though they said they could hear the crackle on the line.

Many old cables are paper insulated, a bit of moisture gets into it and you get all sorts of things like this. The pit outside of your place may be full of water which does get into the joints (often at this point, all that is required is the joint to be re-made.) If it's in the distribution cable to the pillar (the paper insulated stuff) then the only fix is replace the cable (not a small job as it probably affects several hundred homes) or (as is most common) a pair change. Fibre to the Home would fix all this. Fibre to the Node will alleviate some of this problem, however, From the node to the home......good luck!!!
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

Been almost a week without a usable phone line, tech came out on friday and confirmed the cable issue and new cable has to be pulled thru as there were no more spare pairs that were faulty.
I was away for the weekend and some idiot tech called on sunday morning asking when i will be home, i dont know how many times i can tell these morons that is has already been confirmed that the house wiring/hardware is fine and its the pit-pit cabling that is the problem.

Deja Vu ... I feel your pain mate.

The problem is clearly identified, but they don't even listen to their own techs (who are only contractors these days anyway).

    #### me, finally got a time frame from Telstra of 8-10 business days wtf, i am sure its meant to be escalated if a phone line is out of action.
Time to lodge a complaint with the ombudsman for what its worth.

    Good luck.

It took me 6 weeks to get a line fault fixed (intermittent... mostly dead) and mine was a priority business.

Yep... get onto the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman.

The TIO probably won't be much help, as they give the provider 10 working days to respond.

Maybe, maybe not, but the OP has an ongoing issue dating back some time and it's always good to have a complaint on record with the TIO.

Quite often the TIO office intervention helps rattle the carrier's cage and speed up the fault rectification process.

Its really a simple fix , run some new cable between 2 pits and connect at each end, sure there are issues with one of the pits but none of the other 6 houses in my court have issues.

Got a response from TIO, Iiinet have until 19/10 to resolve the issue. Waste of time that was, my issue isn't with iinet anyway, its Telstra dragging their feet as usual.

Yes, and the TIO won't even talk to Telstra unless you are THEIR customer.

Telstra techs have been out 5 times in the last month, its apparently not a simple fault but a major repair is required.
I replied to the Tio email and said I wasn't happy with their response , I got a call shortly after that pretty much confirmed that they are piss weak.

Almost a month without a phone and finally got some action in the street, issue has always been the cable between 2 pits one of which is partially submerged in a garden bed and was always wet as it it wasnt covered. so of course they decided to replace the other pit which is high and dry and covered , they reckon it will be completed by tomorrow but i highly doubt it.

More than 3 years ago the concrete top of the pit broke so I told a Telstra Crew who were at the little exchange hut and one came up an placed a Frame around hole. After more than 18 months of moving the damn frame so we could mow the grass, I was at the local tip and found a multi-ply off cut so I brought it home, trimmed it to size, sprayed it with a yellowish paint used on machinery and put it over the hole. I took the frame back and threw it over the fence at the hut.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!
