Default Mobile Phone Calls and SMS ... Are they secure from eaves dropping ?

Would anyone be able to confirm if in Australis our Mobile Phone System is secure from having calls and SMSs eavesdropped electronically ?

Years ago when there was an analogue system in place there was some issues with this how ever with the digital GSM system we use this is not possible.

I exclude here of course any malware r malicious apps particularly with android devices that obviously can be a risk.

All our mobile comms since the analogue days are digital and encoded to a degree. So as you mentioned apps/malware can intervene but so can govt taps if needed. The encryption is not always end to end and can be intercepted at exchanges or towers or anywhere in between such as the telco itself. Basicly, you cant just eaves drop, but I certainly wouldn't trust ultra sensitive data.

If you're looking for solid end to end communications use apps like Wickr, Signal or Telegram.

    No mobile communications are secure!

There a number of presentations given at conferences such as Defcon, which examine this in detail.

    For starters, see and others.
