I think you could be right Neddie, but I am almost positive he is not Catholic ( I have done a few Googles on his church names and suburbs and while I cant be 100% they are the ones, none are Catholic). St Aidens as an example is Anglican and every St Johns church I can find is also Anglican.

I did a Google on Catechism and it seemed to suggest it wasnt confined to Catholic.....so either way its likely your right I think.

Seems like are far more relaxed life compared to today, even though a lot of time spent traveling by byke

No TV/movies/porn to watch and religious reading/going to church playing a significant role

    Monday May 21st 94

Received letter from Parker this morning saying he had ricked or caught a cold in his back.

    Tuesday May 22nd 94

At 1 oc went down to wharf to see Mr Parnell off by Pakaki (?) to Sydney where he is going for a few weeks holiday and rest after his illness. Came on duty for Ted from 7.30 to 10 in evening and stayed in town all night.

    May 24th 94 (Queens Birthday)

Up at 5.45 am and came in to town by 7.30 train to go Mrs W's picnic but found she was not going to have it - after 10 oc went out to see the military review on cricket ground with Mrs G and Charlie Russen and returned to Mrs W's for dinner about 1.10pm - enjoyed it very much about 3oc Mrs L and W Weatherhead and myself started for Mrs Cooks house. We called in at Mr George Larkins house and stayed there a short time and then went on to Cooks where we all ( Mrs W - L and W - Charlie and I ) stayed for tea and left for home again about 9.45pm. It was a beautiful moonlight night and we arrived home a little after 10. I stayed in town all night after spending a most enjoyable day.

    Friday May 25th 94

Ted relived me from duty at 7pm and Falty and I went to confirmation class at St Johns Parsonage. gave us a splendid address on confirmation . We both walked out afterwards and reached home a little before 10 oclock.

    Saturday May 26th 94

    I was excused in the afternoon, so that I was off duty at 1 oc for the day. At 1oc I went round and got the byke from Brandwoods and cleaned her up. Got on the road for Epping at 2.30 and reached Perth about 4. Stayed at Mrs Heaps and had some refreshments - got a start from there again about 20 minutes to 5 and reached Snake Banks just about dusk. Kept on and arrived at Epping shortly after 6 after a lovely ride, the road being perfect. I stayed at nearly 3 hours - had tea at Smiths Hotel and talked to Parker until quarter to 9 when I made another start to Conara and arrived there a little before 10 oc. Ted arrived by mail train about 10.35. It was 12 oc before we were in bed.{Admin - Snake Banks was renamed to Powranna}

    Sunday May 27th 94

Got up about 9 and had breakfast - shortly after Parker arrived from Epping - Ted and I went for a ride along Campbell Town Road just before dinner, Ted having Parkers byke. Attended church in afternoon Mr McDowall preached on Baptism. After church (4 oc) Ted and I rode up to to see Mr McQueen but found he was in bed with a cold - Had chat with Mrs McQueen and then returned to Conara - after tea we had some music and sat up talking until after 11. It was 12 before we were in bed and near 2 before we went to sleep !

    Monday May 28th 94

Up at 3.15 and had some breakfast and got a start home at 4 am - Moon was up but not very bright owing to it being a little cloudy. Had splendid ride from Epping to . The whole 16 miles of this road was perfect - the best I have ever seen for riding on a bicycle - arrived in town a little before 8 oc very tired. Had a wash and some breakfast at Mrs W's and came on duty at 8.30. Ted returned to town by the express at 2 oc. We both had a very enjoyable trip of it.

    Wednesday May 30th 94

One Sunday evening a long time ago Mrs W was telling us all up at her house , how that Mr W took communion for the last time before he died, at the same time as I took it first after my baptism and confirmation. I was thinking of this coincidence this morning as I do not want to forget it I am entering it up. Perhaps I should not speak of it as a coincidence and that is one reason why I do not want to forget it.

    Thursday May 31st 94

Parker came home from Epping by ordinary train last night and reaching L'ton at 8 oc. He has got 13 days leave of absence. When I got off at 5.30 for tea I went up to see him and found Mr Lingley was having tea at Mrs W's. P came down town with me as I was returning to work at 6 oc. It was raining all the evening, so I asked OC to let me go out by 8.30 train. Parker came out with me and we both arrived home about 9, had tea and went to bed.

    Friday June 1st 94

Came in to town by 7.30am train. Laurie stayed out at home all day until 6.40 train in evening. Got paid today. At 5 went up to Mrs W's, had tea and stayed all evening. Parr(?) home about 7.25. I stayed in all night. L, W and Charlie were to have taken part in the held at St Johns school room in evening, but only Charlie went on account of rain.

    Saturday June 2nd 94

Went as far as St Leonards with Parker this morning by 8.30am train. He is going to spend day at Epping and Conara. Received family ticket in library for 3 months today. Parker took book " Home Acting " down to Birdie Hogan this morning which I am lending her. Got home by 8.30 train in evening and finished preparing lesson for class on Sunday, in bed rather late.

    Sunday June 3rd 94

Came in to work on 7.30am train (Parker also returned from Conara by this train) and came on duty at 8.30 - after 9.30 I got a ride home reaching there about 10.20. About 11 oclock Ted arrived having ridden out on Parkers byke. I was not ready in time for church, so I took myself and Ted down to have a look at new house. After dinner, I had class with Falty and Ern and left with Ted for town about quarter to 3 - Ted riding on byke and me walking. Arrived at Mrs W's about 4.40 and had tea. In evening attanded St Johns church where Mr Wilkinson of St Leonards conducted service and preached. After service I spoke to him in and was very pleased to find that he was walking out and would be company for me. I went up to Mrs W's and got my overcoat and called for Mr Wilkinson at St Johns parsonage again at 8.45 and we both walked home together. I enjoyed this walk very much. Mr W told me a bit about college life and we had a talk about missionary work. Altogether I was very glad indeed to have had the chance of having this my second long talk with him.

Rather than typing it all, why do you not just scan the pages, and we can then "decipher" them at our leisure. Save you a lot of heartache.

    Lots of reasons.

    1. I want to transcribe it so its easier to read in the future - I will have a text copy which will mean less damage to the book (its in good nick but a page fell out last read)

    2. It is a lot quicker for me to transcribe and type it on the fly than scan, resize, upload and add links. I also definitely would not want to squash it open in my flatbed scanner.....it would cause more page loss (images I have posted are from my phone camera...... and that would be a bigger pain in the arse to do).

    3. Half the people here will not bother to read it unless I transcribe it. Thats the nature of people.

I am zipping through it fairly easy, so no problem ( as long as I space it out with a set amount per day)

I reckon Ted is a bad influence on him.

This would suggest he is a reasonably new convert to the religion ? Or had not been baptised at birth ??

Maybe Mrs W's is a tea house or something ? If not, her grocery bill must be huge.

If you are working on a lot of old, fragile, documents maybe you need to invest in a tripod and book stand. Ive done similar in the past, and it works quite well. And, with minimal effect on the source material. In fact, it would be less invasive in that the book would only be open at the page for as long as it takes to photograph, rather than trying to keep it open at a page whilst you transcribe.

From what I have seen on those UK shows 'Time Team', they went to a place where material was printed in an amazing variety of patterns, colours and styles, much of it using wooden blocks suitably inked and pressed onto the fabric.
I love his writing, been easy to read so far.
Is it me of does he seem to be a 'Regular Reader' in that he reads a few chapters or pages at a time, perhaps due to his other interests or due to the lack of good reading light, he can only read during limited periods?
I recognise the names of some of the authors but I havent read much of what they have written.

Despite his efforts in fitting an electric doorbell, electric lights were yet to come........

I am only doing it once, I generally don't deal with historic documents.

Reading where he spoke to a Mr Wilkinson at the Church who later preached made me wonder could this be High Church of England ( or other Protestant) rather than Catholic?
Maybe they drank a lot of tea because the water may not have tasted the best and too, drinking unboiled water could lead to illnesses.

    Monday June 4th 94

Two of my young cousins (May and Jessie Progosting(?)- Uncle Fred's girls) were spending the day out at home, so in the evening I got Thireau to let me away in time to catch 8.30 train and arrived home about 9. We had a little music before going to bed. The cousins stayed all night of course.

    Tuesday June 5th 94

My 19th birthday. Came in by 7.30am train being on duty at 8.30 and took Mr Fords gun which Parker had borrowed up to Mrs W's. They all wished me the happy returns etc and made me a present of a nice book called " Letters of Dorothy Osborne "which I think I will like very much. Parker left for a day shooting at Conara by 8.30am train. I recd a nice card from E R in morning at office. In evening went to an "at home " at Mrs Kelly's but cant say that I enjoyed it particularly well. Stayed in all night.

    Wednesday June 6th 94

Returned home by 8am train and found May Burns at our house. In evening Thireau worked for me, so that I was off duty at 5.30 instead of 9. Went up to party held in honor of Charlie W's birthday. We had several games and broke up a little after 10 after rather an enjoyable evening. Stayed in all night. Parker, Nancy and Birdie Hogan between them gave me a birthday present a nicely bound edition of Dickens " Martin Chuzzlewit". I had almost forgotten to say that Parker returned from Conara by mail train arriving in town at 7.30 this morning.

    Thursday June 7th 94

Was day work today and went home by 5 oclock train - got dressed had tea and returned to town by 6.30 train. Called in for Parker and then we both went down to Mrs R's for the evening. We met about 20 people and spent the evening in games, music, singing and supper ! It was in honor of Bob's birthday although it does not come round for a few days yet as I understand. It was 12 oclock before we reached Mrs W's. I'm afraid we are in disgrace for being so late. I stayed in all night.

    Friday June 8th 94

Returned home in company with Parker by 8.30am train this morning. Mrs W could not get up before we left owing to her having a bad headache (I expect through being disturbed from sleep last night). Laurie has been out at home all day. Parker came in to town by 6.30 train evening and left again for Conara or Epping by 8.30 mail train. He has gone down overnight to be in time for a little wattle bird shooting in morning.

    Saturday June 9th 94

Falty, Ern and I slept in our new house for first time last night. Bought a pair of dancing shoes at Duncans, in dinner hour for Monday (7/6). Went home by 5 train and did not come in to town again.

    Sunday June 10th 94

Rode in on byke to work this morning - rather foggy. After 9.30 went up to Mrs W's and found to my great surprise that Parker had not returned home since leaving for Epping or Conara on Friday night. Reached home about 10.40 but did not go to church in morning. In afternoon, Ern went to White Hills on Falty's byke to arrange a musician for Monday night. falty and I went to the quarry and Falty got some maiden hair. In evening attended evening service with mother and Mrs Ford. Mr M and Robinson (lay reader) took the service . Falty had to come to work in evening , so Ern walked in and out again with him.

    Some interesting stuff above.

We now know our man is 19 and there was hooliganism at Bobs birthday resulting in a late night and Mrs W getting a headache from her disturbed sleep.

But where is Parker ?? As a non return from wattle bird shooting, was he mistaken for a wattle bird and shot ? Or is he snagging Birdie Hogan in the bushes ? Did Falty rip a womans hair out, or did he get a Maiden hair fern ?

    Stay tuned for more

To this day my Mum always refers to the meal in the middle of the day as "dinner" time and the meal at night as "tea" time ...... interesting that he is also referring to "dinner hour" as in the middle of the day time

My nieces today always correct her and say the meal in the middle of the day is "lunch" and the meal at night is "dinner"

    Monday June 11th 94

Got up a little before 7am and walked in to work being on duty at 8.30am. Laurie returned to town by express. Ted threatened to stop Parker being able to come to the house - warming at home in evening, by bending head of his machine up thro running in to the path ! But Brandwood managed to repair it before evening, so that Parker might be able to ride down to work on Tuesday morning, his leave of absence being up on Tuesday night. Eliza Taylor, Eva Faulkner, Emily, Gertie, Laurie and I went out home by 5 oc train and Ted rode out on Parkers byke after 5.30. We found Violet Hall already at home when we arrived. Dick Darcy, Bob Taylor and Charlie Gibson drove out in cab and arrived shortly before 8. Minnie and Jack Hall also came about same time. Dancing started at 8 or a little after and we finished last dance somewhere about 3am ! Dick, Bob and Charlie returned to town in cab - Minnie H also returned home to White Hills. Laurie, Emily and I saw Hettie Cobbett home about 2am - the rest stayed all night. Everybody seemed to enjoy themselves well and I think it was a thorough success. We had a hired musician from who played the accordian very well. Dick Darcy played the violin, Bob Taylor picolo and flute - Violet Hall, Eva Faulkner, Eliza Taylor, Emily, also played the piano in turn so we had plenty of music. Besides those I have mentioned there was present Mary and Maggie Taylor, Mary Burns, Mr Wren, mother, Mr Ford, Ern and Falty.

    Tuesday June 12th 94

Up again this morning after about 3 hours sleep at 7am (Emily woke me by knocking on bedroom door). Ted left to walk in to work about 7.30am. laurie left to catch train about 8.30 and I heard later on he very nearly missed it ! We had some music and a little more dancing after breakfast till about 9 oc. Then I came down to station to see Emily, Gertie, Eliza and Eva off by 9.30 train for town. Went back home in bus. Came on duty at 12 oc and walked home after 9 oc. Felt very miserable when I reached home as I seemed to see over again all that had taken place the previous night. Emily was telling me on St Leonards station this morning that her 18th birthday came round on June 27th. Saw her again at 5.30 in evening. Everyone seemed very tired this morning. I was not tired, but felt a little inclined to be sick ! It left me before the afternoon however.

    Wednesday June 13th 94

Day work today. In evening went up to Mrs W's and had music lesson and went home by 8.30 train.

    Thursday June 14th 94

Got up a little before 8am and started fixing electric bell in new house - spoke to Mr Alison on telephone and asked him if he could excuse me from work. I should have been on at 12 but they excused me until arrival of 6.30 train in evening from St Leonards so I worked on all day at bell but was not successful at making it work ok. Came on duty at 6.50 and worked on till 9. Walked home and arrived there about 10.15. Had another try to fix bell up but failed to make it ring - got to bed after 12 oc.

    Friday June 15th 94

Went home by 5 train and tried greater part of the evening to find fault in bell fixings, but again unsuccessful.

    Saturday June 16th 94

Got up before 7am and had another try at bell - I think I have now found the faulty wire. Came in by eleven thirty train and called on ather(?) Dunn or Williams (the firm that used to go by name of Dunn and Williams before dissolving partnership) about cross for Mr W's grave. Came on duty at 12 oc - got off at 9 and stayed in all night.

    Sunday June 17th 94

When I woke up this morning, I found Parker in bed, he ahaving arrived about 3am from Epping having ridden his byke up. Went to 8 oclock communion service which Mr Kelly conducted assisted by Mr Dixon - after service went up and had breakfast as I was excused from duty this morning. Parker got up shortly after 11 - I did not go to church again in morning - stayed in to dinner - after dinner had a little music and singing and made a start for home about quarter to 3. Rather cloudy day but I enjoyed walk home very much. Attended evening service at St Leonards with mother, Mr Ford, Mary Burns, Falty and Ern. Mr Wilkinson took service - got to bed about 10.30
