The purchase of the dancing shoes...it that because he's being very social in the past week, or for an upcoming event? At first I thought the 7/6 was a date for something but realised its past that date, so I'm assuming it's the price. Maybe with all the partying he thought he needed new shoes, just like my teenagers do today.

Maybe they drank a lot of tea because the water may not have tasted the best and too, drinking unboiled water could lead to illnesses.
I am pretty sure none of the churches are Catholic given their names and searches on them.

I have many many ancestors in Evandale which is adjacent to all his travels and although it had 3 churches including one Catholic, the Catholic church was by far in the minority religion wise.

I thought the same initially, that it was the date but I would also think its the price.

He is certainly hitting the social circuit a fair bit now I like the bit where he feels a bit ill the next day....maybe someone spiked the punch ? If so, I reckon it was either Ern or Falty

I must be old, that's how I refer to dinner and tea time....

They weren't scared of exercise in those days, one day they walked from st Leonards to kings meadows, the gorge, town, and back to St Leonards.
About 20km round trip from memory, and over some decent hills....

Yes, the amount of exercise they did in those days was amazing. I think you would struggle to find anyone under 50 with a weight problem. Some may have seen a post from me about my great great grandfather William Candy and what he was doing at age 50.......a massive bike trip.

They must have had good senses of direction as I doubt there would be much in the way of lighting, night trips would have to be by the light of the moon. I have driven along that road to Conara in the last couple of years.

Interesting read. I can confirm that the churches are all Protestant. St John's is still the main Anglican church.

Bidencopes was a well known shop - I think the building is still standing. I liked the reference to buying shoes at "Duncan's". Duncan's shoe store (James Duncan & Co) was a local institution in what is now the Brisbane Street Mall. I've bought a few pairs of new shoes there myself. I don't think it exists anymore though. An older friend of mine recalls being taken there for a shoe fitting when he was a kid and having his feet put in a fluoroscope (sp?) - an x-ray machine that gave a live view of the bones in his feet. I wonder how many staff subsequently contracted cancer?

Conara Junction is where the main North-South railway connects to the railway line to the East Coast. I guess it serviced the coal mines at Fingal back then, like does now.

Cheers for that, we can now put that one to rest.

I found the same from journo Charles Wooley when I did a Google. Wow, that would have been trippy as a kid.

Anyway, lets see what our bloke is up to this week................

    Monday June 18th 94

Parker rode out to St Leonards railway station this morning and joined 8.30 train there and returned to Epping on account of it being so wet. I came on duty at 12. In evening, Falty and I returned home by 8.30pm train - it was very wet. After I had my tea, I put the 2 new pots I had taken home in the bell batterys and succeeded in making it ring splendidly. The office window bell is now fixed up ok temporarily. I have to connect mothers room and front door yet and fix wires up all permanently.

    Tuesday June 19th 94

Went out by 5 oc train. Went to a social held in the St Leonard's institute by the girls mutual help society with mother and Ern. Falty came down later on. It passed off very well and I was rather glad afterwards that I went. Arrived home shortly after 10 oclock. Miss Ralfe returned from her holiday trip to Sydney today. She came up by express from Hobart and came from train straight to the office - says she enjoyed herself splendidly.

    Friday June 22nd 94

Should have been on duty 12 till 9 today, but I changed Ted and so came on at 8.30am and went home by 5 oc train.

    Saturday June 23rd 94

Went home by 5oc train this evening. Returned to town by ordinary(?) arriving at 8 oc. Saw E R and stayed in at Mrs W's all night.

    Sunday June 24th 94

Came on duty in morning with Ted. After 9.30, we walked up St Johns St and through the square to meet Mrs W and with her we came back and went to St Johns Church thinking there was 10 oc communion service but we found we had made a mistake and so we returned home rather disappointed. I left about 10.45 and walked home arriving there shortly after 12. After dinner, I had the class with Falty and Ern in the drawing room. [Struck out with line through it]I had a long talk to Falty on the por[/strikeout]. I had meant to come in to town on byke if the weather had been fine, but as it came on to rain, drizzly, I could not - I was to see E if I had come in and I was sorry not to be able to. We had some hymns after tea and Mary Burns and I went to evening service which Mr Wilkinson took. Mother was not very well all evening.

It seems they did a lot of shift swapping or 'subbing' for one another by coming in early to allow another to go early.

I am wondering if the 'Two Pots' he had taken home were a 'charge' wrapped in muslin and put in a glass jar (Leyden?) filled with acid and a Carbon Rod stood beside it to form a single cell battery? I have seen these in use a 100 years later powering Railway signaling equipment.

As for walking or riding home at night by the 'Full Moon Light', we're spoilt today because of electric lights on our cars or streets but in his time he had no such luxury.

    Monday June 25th 94

Walked in to work in morning, being on at 8.30. At dinner time, I bought a very cheap edition of for 6d at Walsh Bros shop. Went of duty at 4.45 and went and had my hair cut. Then I went up and asked Mrs R if E might come out to St Leonards and stay with us for a week as she is getting a weeks holidays in a few days. I have not yet had her answer as she said she would see what Mr R said. Had tea at Mrs W's and then after that had a music lesson. I escorted E down to at 7.45 and returned home by 8.30am train.

    Tuesday June 26th 94

Did a little to the cupboard I am making for our bedroom this morning and came in to town by 11.30 train. Met Mrs W in Charles St and went with her to arrange with Dunn(?) and Williams about stone cross for Mr W's grave. He has promised to have it finished and erected within 3 weeks today and it is to be the same as the co(?)ing is. In evening, mother rang up Mrs R and asked about E coming out to stay. She has promised mother she will at least come out part of the time, so I think it is pretty certain she will be able to stay the whole week. Walked home after 9 and found the road very wet and sloppy after the rain.

    Friday June 29th 94

On Wednesday night and Thursday morning did a bit more to the cupboard in our bedrrom - was day work today and went home by 5 oc train accompanied by E. She is going to stay the week. In evening we had some music and singing. Mother had to go to bed early on account of a very bad headache she had.

    Saturday June 30th 94

Got up shortly after 7am but did nothing special during morning except putting up bookcase temporarily in our room with the assistance of E. E also came down to first bridge with me on my way to station to catch 11.30 train. Should have been on duty till 9 oc but I felt so restless during afternoon ! That I paid Ted to work for me in the evening and so I went home again on 5 oc train. E met me again near the big bridge and we walked up together. After tea I wrote to Hannah and Birdie Hogan thanking them for their joint present with Parker on my birthday. I also wrote to Parker himself and E and I took both letters down to station and had them posted on mail train (8.30). Ellen left us today on account of her health - she went by 12.40 train. Mother has arranged for another girl to come next Wednesday.

    Sunday July 1st 94

Was up about 6.20 am. I was out about 7 and we sat and talked till near 8 oc when I left on byke for town being on duty at 8.30am. Had wind against me and weather looked very threatening. After 9.30 I rode up to St Johns parsonage to thank Mrs Kelly for the trouble she has taken in helping mother to get a girl. From there I went to Mrs W's to get Ted's hat as he had started from office at 9.30 to walk out to St leonards with only his cap. Mrs W told me of her suggestion that Parker , ted and I should put the S(?) money we had put by together and get something for the St Leonards Church instead of St Aidens as first proposed. She thinks it would be more appropriate and Ted and I quite agree with her that it would. I left to ride home about 10 and arrived at St Leonards about 10.30 and found Ted had already arrived, he having got a left part of the way out. I did not go to morning service. After dinner, I looked for Mr Wilkinson on his way to childrens afternoon service in the church and arranged to see him at 3.30.

I did not have class with Falty and Ern this afternoon. It was to rough and rainy to go out for a walk which was rather disappointing as both E and I had been looking forward to a ramble today. About 3.30, Ted and I went down to parsonage to see Mr W as arranged about making a gift to church. He suggested a new altar cloth as the most necessary thing at present wanted and we have left it to him to make enquiries as to cost, design, material etc and also to speak to Church warden. We think this would be as suitable as anything else we could choose and it would certainly be a great improvement to the appearance od chancel of church. Especially if we could get a real good one with a nice design. He is to let us know what he has done in a few days. We stayed talking to him close on an hour and then came home again. I found E lying down with a slight headache. After tea we had some music and singing. Mother, Mrs F, Ern, Falty, ted, E and I went to church - quite a party of us.

After church, E and I went for a short walk down town road but found it rather sloppy and wet. I enjoyed this walk very much and I hope I shall remember it for a long time - I think I will. Ted stayed at St Leonards all night and slept with Ern. It was a very rough and rainy night.

Your not wrong Gordon, its a very flexible workplace for 1894 thats for sure.

Its still difficult to work out exactly what he does..............and all this backwards and forwards makes it hard to keep track of where he is. He must have the train timetable memorised.

Its safe to say that he has fallen in love with E

It must have been quite a ramble !

Ted stayed at St Leonards all night and slept with Ern.
    Good Lord !!!!!!

I wonder if they will enquire to Mr Wilkinson about Gay Marriage at the church ?

I think "E", who is also referred to as "E R", is Emily who was mentioned much earlier (who once stayed at the house and woke him in the morning).

Several girls whose names start with E have been mentioned, but he also mentions their surnames and none of them start with R. So that leaves Emily.

It seems he is employed at a Railway Station so staring from the bottom, a Porter whose duties are attending trains, sweeping the platforms/toilets etc, selling tickets, either using Morse Code to send and receive messages both internal and maybe for the Public? Answering the telephone if it is available, sending and receiving Parcels and Goods, doing the Station Fires like in the waiting rooms and offices.

He again uses the terms Dinner for Midday and Tea at night as I do, mixing Dinner and Lunch for the midday meal. I have wondered if TEA for the evening meal was a corruption for a 'High Tea' which occurred mid afternoon and was a social event but 'TEA' was taken later near dark as the evening meal and before 'Supper' which I gather was the main held late evening but later became a light snack at home or functions such as Church Socials etc.

He works Sundays (or some at least), and going by the post for July 1 he rode into town to be on duty at 830, then rides to Mrs Kelly at 930. So his job entails some travel on weekends, and having to be "on duty", but no office or shop etc. I thought maybe a porter or station worker but if he rides around on duty I'm thinking maybe police or military?
