Makes me wonder if that dismissal was a simple culling of 'junior employee's' now they were being paid adult wages but still doing the work of a 'Junior'?
I mentioned earlier sometime around 1895 onwards, there was an economic downtown which may have been minor or major in his area and Industry and if thats the case, that would have allowed his employer to shed staff unless as he was seemingly lucky enough to either transfer to another section or occupation in keeping with his age/qualifications.
While Government jobs were generally sticklers for seniority, this may not have been applied if he was still a 'Junior' and went seeking an adult position and a 'Good Word' was put forward on his behalf.

    Thursday Morning March 28th 95

Last night I went with Arthur and Ern to the academy and saw in "Hamlet". I like her quite as good as Bentley I think. She acted wonderfully for a woman.
We (Arthur and I) walked out afterwards and reached home about 12.45. This is the third time I have seen Hamlet played by good actors. This Clara Webb's wedding day. I am in the operating room this morning. Went to St Johns Parsonage and said good bye to Mr Parnell. He leaves for England tomorrow (Friday) via Hobart. His address will be 9 Brigstocke Rd Bristol, Eng.

Off duty in afternoon. Had tea at Mrs W's. After that Mrs W, Laeta, Win and I went to the Eng Burial Ground together.

    Tuesday April 16th 95

Last Friday went down to Low Head and spent Easter with Ted and his mother and returned to town by Centennial at 6 oc last night. Missed 10 oc train and walked home. Enjoyed my trip very much. Called at Mrs MacDougalls and met Mrs Rich Propsting for first time in my dinner hour. She is one of mothers aunts. Found my cousin Nellie from Ross at home when I went out by 5oc train.

    Wednesday April 17th 95

    Wrote to Parker this evening.

    Sunday May 12th 95

It is now over three weeks since our new arrangement and over two since we have spoken to each other. Last Sunday I was trying to report for my conduct of the previous night. I record this for reference perhaps years if I live. With Gods help I am going to try to amend my life. Since my confirmation I feel I have miserably failed.

Yesterday (Sunday) went to morning service at St Leonards when Mr Garrard read a very good sermon. Read a story from Wilsons Border Tales to Arthur during afternoon. Started walking to town about 6.10 and went to evening service at St Johns although I was a little late. Mr Ingle preached a good sermon taking as his text "Do unto others as you would they should do unto you" etc. After church went up to R's. It was the first time I saw E since her return from Kelso. At least to speak to. met a Mr Sadlier. Miss Blair was at the door when I arrived there. Walked home and reached St Leonards about 10.40. Rode in on Erns byke this morning.

And so ends the diary of a year in the life of George Braithwaite 1875 - 1958. As previously mentioned he married "E" (Emily) his sweetheart in Launceston in 1902.

I was quite surprised how busy a life he lead......you could read a history book and think life would have been pretty dreary in late Victorian Northern Tasmania but as we saw, socialising was a big thing.

It was also interesting to see the workplace flexibility, you would not think employees would be swapping shifts and leaving early in this era, so again its something you wouldn't find in a book.

I found it a fascinating insight to the late Victorian era and learnt a bit from it. Identifying everyone in it was a bonus and then finding out that the Weatherhead's actually made a contribution to a benefit concert for my own great great grandmother was amazing.

This week in the Village Association Newsletter was the comment that in 1950, the Village held a Dance every fortnight.
I know during the Summer they held cricket matches at the local showground with much fielding done from the Bar at the pub if not from behind a changing shed.......
But they socialised quite regularly as can often been found when checking the family tree.............

It sort of sounds like one of those "wake up on Sunday morning with a sore head and start having flashbacks that you made an arse of yourself"

As great as his diary entries have been, George didn't really shows us too much of his inner self with what he wrote. It was all very factual, but not very personal.

He wrote what he saw of himself, no doubt based on the attitude and conduct of others but we never really see the Mr Hyde lurking under the cloak of Dr Jekyle, do we?
He went to work regular, he seems to have been of an even temperament, took his pleasures from his surrounding and those around him.
We dont know of course just how close he and 'E' were during their courting period and how much influence she had on him but I would not be surprised that once they became a 'Couple', he was expected to 'Toe the Line' or be shown the door !!
In return he had the promise of a partner to share his life with and the prospects of living comfortably due to his employment and by accounts, they did just that.

It really does show what a different life it was. Much slower paced, I wonder how any of us would cope back then.

Its not so hard as you think if you can stop the clock being your Master.
This became obvious after I retired and found after years of shift work fitting in daily needs, I didnt have to any more.
In the majority of instances, because you have all Day to go shopping or visiting just 'doing', O'Clock suddenly has no meaning.
Regrettably things like any Medical still need to be arranged but now you ask for a selection of times rather than having to accept one that fitted your work schedule.

Not long after retiring We were shopping one day and and passing one of our pubs and looking at the Counter lunch Menu, I suggested we did as we could never do it before due to having to being 'somewhere else or having kids with us.
Since then we do do just that, go over to our next Town, get some fish and chips and go eat in the park by the Lake......
In those times they paced everything as we do but no cars to whisk us here and there and take us nowhere in a great rush., it appears slower.

I dont know that it really was that much slower paced in George's case. He was pretty busy really, though I have no doubt that he was probably busier (socially) than most in Tasmania at that time.
Having the ability to travel by train obviously helped him to get around as well. They weren't long train trips, but if you walked them they would take an hour or so.

I read my Nana's 1941 diary last night, it was pretty boring. My grandfather's is much more interesting.......long periods of boredom occasionally interrupted by people trying to kill him. He had one of the worse jobs in the Middle east in 1941......an anti aircraft gunner camped in the middle of Haifa Oil Refinery in (modern day) Israel. You either hit the plane before it drops a bomb, or you explode along with the huge oil tanks you are camped next to.

We really live boring lives these days

Saw this today and remembered this enjoyable thread. There is a youtube link to a clip from a film set in Tasmania, maybe a few years after this diary. An interesting read anyway.

A bump for an old thread.

Having a few spare hours this arvo, I thought I would get off my arse and cut and paste all the transcribed text in to a Word document for my own records (no doubt I will mention the diary at some stage in the future to a friend or family who will want to read it......they can have a digital copy to read and not the original).

Unfortunately all the pics I posted in this thread are gone , but I did keep a copy of them somewhere so I will find them and add them back in.

I read a story some time ago that the 'Hollywood' studios of the day brought much pressure on Thearte owners NOT to screen films other than those supplied by them and maybe with no where to screen an Australian made film, no one was prepared to financially invest in them and so those like Louise Loverly 'withered' on the vine..........

This website might be of interest to those that enjoyed this thread.

The photos of the Russen's a page or 2 back are from this site. 3 or 4 years before George's diary, Tasmania staged what was a massive trade exhibition. To visit it you had to have an official ID with a photo on it, fortunately a copy of the photos has survived.
Unfortunately George and Emily's photos arent there, but a few others mentioned in the story are.
