Default Old Fax and No dial up??

    Hi,

I have an Brother MFC with a standard dial up FAX.

I also have NO home phone, just Naked ADSL.

Is there an adapter or magic box that I can "trick" my fax machine into thinking it is connected to a phone line and send faxes over teh internet?

    Thanks for your help

You cannot send a fax directly through a naked adsl connection. It is possible to send a fax over VOIP though to connect your Brother fax you wound need a pstn (telephone) port to connect it to. These are available on some VOIP enabled modems and specialised VOIP appliances. I haven't checked but you should be able to find one somewhere. I think Linksys used to make a few and providers like MyNetFone would often provide them with their service.

Having said this, I would not recommend it. I tried it years ago and was never able to get satisfactory results. I could occasionally get a fax to go through with error correction disabled but it was essentially unusable. From memory there is a protocol, T38, supported by some fax machines for sending over VOIP, but I doubt it works very well. Fax is essentially heading the way of the Dodo here as the NBN spreads.

Try a simple internet search such as .

From the NBN website at .

"The nbn is capable of supporting fax usage on some phone services. You need to speak to your preferred service provider to ensure they are offering the necessary service over the nbn™ network.

More information on Fax Machine compatibility is available here:
