Default Our Automotive Stores and Pricing?

People always say to me, go to Bursons for parts, best prices....
Well over the years, i have found that to be anything but true.

Today i'm just chasing a Timing Belt kit for my Landcruiser 1HD-FTE

Genuine Toyota Kit (Timing Belt, Sub- Assembly and Tensioner) $300

Dayco KTBA 171H would be a non genuine replacement.

    eBay:$199 + $15ph

    Autobarn: $250

    Supercheap: $312

    Bursons: $389.50

FFS, Burson is almost twice as much for the exact same part as eBay and $90 more than Genuine Toyota parts!
Let alone being $140 more expensive than Autobarn for the exact same kit, which is 400meters further down the road.

Im sure all companies are making their healthy margin on this kit, but a healthy margin + an additional $140.... come on.

There are a few Auto Repairers on this site.... What do you find?
The variations are crazy in my view...
Only makes you question anything else they have for sale.

That link didn't go to the belt
And i can buy the Belt Only from Toyota for $80

    This would be your link:

And this would be the same Dayco Kit from cjmotors: $222

But once again, its belt only, not what i'm discussing in this thread (which is a kit), but thanks anyway
I did have this Kit saved from cjmotors, which also has the water pump:

Still cheaper then Bursons and Supercheap, and it includes a water pump as well

It always pays to shop around, even if you think you are at the cheapest place. Automotive stuff is allover the place when it comes to price for some reason.

Your not wrong, anyone that simply buys an item without doing a Google these days is asking to lose money.

Even if I am out and about and see something I consider buying, I pull out the mobile and Google it. As you mentioned, some of the prices differences are huge, not just a couple of dollars.

Hey OB, I found the same with Bursons, I can't afford to buy anything there. Supercheap are not far from the same.
I buy my heavy items like oil at either Repco or Autobahn now as they are located next to each other here (75km away in launceston), everything else I buy online as it works out cheaper.

yep, bought my fridge from them, delivered $200 under what I would have had to pay the best priced retailer 75km away & I would have had to pick it up. Go Figure.
    Cheers, Tiny

Yep, i honestly see Burson's like my own Electrical Wholesellers
If you are not an account customer and just walked off the street, they will charge whatever they can for something

The hilarious thing, the Burson's store rep was telling me as looking up my part number, that its going to be expensive, then goes, oh no, yours is cheap, only $389, they are normally $700 he said.... (at this stage, i already knew i could buy it for $195)
FFS fella, what shit you spinning. What sort of BS was that?

I know there is a group of people out there that scald you for buying online and not supporting the local bloke.
But come on, this has to go both ways, i'm happy to support the local guy, but not when he is having a complete lend of me.

automotive parts in this country are just a damn ripoff. i havent bought anything for the new Prado yet but for the previous Pajero everything came from Japan or the USA at half the price it was here , including postage. The factory markups are bad enough without being raped again by local suppliers.

at least Japanese cars tend to be much cheaper than the European garbage some people are stupid enough to buy.

my neighbour needed an Oxy sensor for her Subaru - Genuine $650 , Amiyama - $35.

Yeah, that Amiyama is mentioned on a lot of Landcruiser forums too.

Funny looking site, but obviously it works

If you need the part today then you probably have to go to Bursons, although I find that they are slacking with the availability of specialised parts compared to the past, so I don't even ring them anymore.

As I always plan ahead and am aware of possible upcoming issues with my vehicle, I can take my time to find the best price usually on Ebay and often from the UK, or depending what you need just from the wreckers.

I'd be interested with any members here that have Trade Account at Repco or Burson's to post the Trade Price for the Dayco Kit mentioned.
I've ended up buying it from eBay (which is supporting some local bloke, just not this local bloke)

Yeah saw that.... a real concern.

    Even Genuine vs Non Genuine

Here is a Toyota Landcruiser and Hilux Oil Filter.
    Cut open after use.

    Ryco Filter

    Donaldson Filter

    Toyota Genuine

Clearly a lot more filtration material with the Genuine Filter, it also weighs twice as much
Its also been mentioned, that the Toyota Genuine filter got the engine to oil pressure faster after starting than the others.

    Bursons...meh.

I qualify for trade pricing from them.

Needed an alternator a little while ago.

Supercheap Auto was almost $200 cheaper at their full retail price, than Bursons 'trade' price for the identical item.... and Supercheap is not often that cheap themselves.

As everyone seems to say... shop around.

Also... just because one place is cheaper for a particular item, doesn't mean they'll be cheapest for your next purchase though either.

And OB... yep.. electrical wholesalers... same deal. I guess plumbers and building supplies most likely also fall into the rip-off category as well.

I saw this variance years ago when a fellow who owned a Rover was getting the car serviced and he was telling the mechanic/owner (Toyota dealer) that if he bought spares in Rover branded containers, they were far more expensive than the same item packed in a BMC container.
No way in this instance can you claim the cheaper was of a lesser quality when they both came out of the place that built the cars !!!
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Bursons are a rippoff, I wont buy anything from them! To be honest and as a landcruiser owner, not telling you what to do mate, but when it comes to timing on a FTE I highly recommend you use the genuine parts, those tensioners are a critical part, cheap aftermarket parts like that are common failures ending up with a destroyed engine, and you know $90 extra is a small price to pay for genuine part and theres the thought as your driving along without having to worry weather a aftermarket part is going to fail!

    Interesting...

Just rang local Toyota Dealer, spoke to Spare Parts guy
(an older chap, in the game for years, has awards for his work plastered on the wall)

Said he would have no hesitation using a Dayco Kit or Genuine Parts.
Very interesting hearing that from a Toyota Dealership!

He has been in the game 40 years, said he has never heard of a Dayco belt being the cause of an engine failure.
And that they have sold 1,000,000's of kits.

In fact, he looked up online to could tell me the local Burson's had a kit (Dayco) in stock, from his Toyota Spare Parts terminal.

The sad part, Toyota didn't have the parts in stock.
Had the belt, but nothing else.

He did say he wouldn't fit a "Motorcraft" kit or belt though
He also said the Genuine filters are a different story!

I wonder if Toyota even make parts for the 80 and 100 series anymore?
We are talking a 11 year old vehicle at best

Obviously they supply them when asked.
    But who makes them?
But i have to agree Rick, when looking the Genuine Oil filter compared to after market
Not even close to the same thing!

Yep $90 over 150,000ks isn't much, i probably should have just got Genuine and it would have been in stock and i would have installed it by now.

Maybe i do that, then take the Dayco kit to Bursons and say, as you sell these for $389, how about you give me $250 for it
